WEDNESDAY, Aug. 31 (HealthDay News) ? Some breast cancer patients over a age of 60 who have small, early-stage tumors can skip hormone therapy though augmenting their risk of death, a new investigate says.

The women in a investigate had tumors that were hormone-receptor positive, that means they need estrogen to grow. Among other things, hormone therapy for these tumors is designed to starve a breast cancer cells by obscure a volume of estrogen in a body.

But this therapy also has side effects that can be debilitating and spasmodic even life-threatening, so a researchers wanted to establish a advantage for women with a low risk of cancer spread.

To do so, researchers from Denmark followed 3,197 women with breast cancer, ages 35 to 74, who had no lymph node involvement. They were not given a hormone therapy that is typically given to women who have hormone receptor-positive tumors.

The researchers followed a women for a median of scarcely 15 years. They found that those aged 60 and comparison with smaller tumors did not have any incomparable risk of genocide than a ubiquitous race in a same age range. (Tumors of 10 millimeters or reduction were deliberate ?smaller.?)

In new years, a trend has been to give all women with hormone-receptor certain breast cancer hormone diagnosis after surgical treatment, pronounced investigate author Dr. Peer Christiansen, highbrow during a Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark. ?But formed on this study, advantage is not approaching in a low-risk organisation in question.?

The investigate is published in a Aug. 31 emanate of a Journal of a National Cancer Institute.

During a follow-up period, 970 women died. The risk of failing was aloft than that of a ubiquitous race in those with incomparable tumors, 11 millimeters to 20 millimeters in size. There was also an additional risk of failing in younger women, aged 35 to 59, compared to a ubiquitous population. However, women 60 and comparison did not have a higher-than-normal risk.

The researchers focused essentially on either a miss of hormone therapy increasing a risk of death. But they also looked during cancer recurrences. ?The identified low-risk organisation had fewer inner and apart recurrences than patients not belonging to this group,? Christiansen said.

?In Denmark, 85 percent of all patients with breast cancer have hormone-receptor certain tumors,? Christiansen said. According to a American Cancer Society, dual out of 3 breast cancers are these supposed ER-positive tumors.

The commentary relate some prior studies, pronounced Jennifer Griggs, an associate highbrow of inner medicine during a University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. She co-authored an editorial on a study. The risk of genocide is already low in these patients with really small, hormone-positive savage cancer though lymph node involvement, she said.

The new investigate ?confirms what we know, though it leaves open a lot of questions as well,? she said. ?Not everybody needs systemic [hormone] therapy, though a doubt we are stranded with is, ?Who does???

Despite a findings, she writes that many women will wish to take a hormone therapy to revoke their risk of recurrence, both in a breast with a strange cancer and a conflicting breast.

The biggest advantage of a therapy, she said, might be to forestall these recurrences. However, she said, some women have difficulty granting a side effects of a hormone therapy. Those can embody prohibited flashes and corner pain.

For those women who aren?t certain if they wish to go on a hormone therapy, that is typically given for 5 years, Griggs suggested they cruise a hearing of about 3 months. Then, depending on side effects, a lady can confirm either to stay on a diagnosis or not.
