I just read this great post from the Microsoft BrightSide staff and wanted to share. During these challenging economic times, government agencies have adopted the motto of "doing more with less." There's been a lot of discussion recently about solutions that can cut costs and drive efficiency in agencies, but now we are seeing something even better come from these solutions: JOBS.?
Employment is a big issue right now for many Americans. The great news is that as government agencies find ways to save, they are also finding ways to grow. A recent?Microsoft-sponsored IDC research study found that nearly 1.6 million new public sector jobs?will be created globally as a result of cloud computing by the end of 2015.?
According to Microsoft, the study found that a little money spent up front investing in?cloud solutions can lead to substantial returns down the line. As organizations invest more in innovative IT services, they generate savings that can be invested in the hiring of sales, finance, production and even marketing teams.
One awesome finding that I noticed was that the cloud could create?$1.1 trillion in revenue a year by 2015. In fact, according to Microsoft, cloud computing can be save organizations more than outsourcing, while also creating jobs. ?

Tennessee 'Monkey Bill' of the Day - TDW Geeks
On Monday, the Tennessee Senate approved a bill that would allow the state?s teachers to discuss creationism in the classroom, and challenge scientific theories including evolution and global warming, by a vote of 24-8.
The legislation would allow teachers to present the ?scientific strengths and scientific weaknesses? of ?controversial? topics such as ?biological evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming, and human cloning.?
It?s being called the ?monkey bill? by science education advocates, a reference to the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, where a Tennessee schoolteacher was prosecuted for violating a law against teaching evolution in public schools.
The bill will now be considered by the state?s House of Representatives, which passed similar legislation last April. If it?s approved, it will fall to Tennessee governor Bill Haslam to sign or veto the measure.
Haslam hasn?t weighed in on the bill, and has said he plans to discuss it with the state?s board of education before making a decision.
?It is a fair question what the General Assembly?s role is ? That?s why we have a state board of education,? Haslam told the Tennesseean earlier this week.

Young Vito Indicted In Slim Dunkin Murder
Rapper has been charged with killing the Waka Flocka associate in an Atlanta recording studio in December 2011.

Young Vito, the rapper who police say shot and killed Waka Flocka associate Slim Dunkin in an Atlanta recording studio in December 2011, was indicted by a grand jury in Georgia on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old Vito, born Vinson Hardimon, was indicted on charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony. Initially it was reported that Slim Dunkin was murdered in an argument that started over a piece of candy. Now it is being reported that Hardimon and Dunkin, born Mario Hamilton, fought over recording time. After a scuffle, Hamilton was shot in the chest and was transported to Grady Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Dunkin was an emerging talent in Waka Flocka Flame's Brick Squad Monopoly crew. He appeared alongside Waka on his 2010 debut album, Flockaveli, and on Gucci Mane and V-Nasty's BAYTL LP last year. Slim also had a number of solo mixtape releases. Last Halloween he dropped Menace II Society, a 20-track mixtape that featured Gucci Mane, Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy.
The day after Dunkin's death, via Twitter. "WISH IT WAS ME ... MY F---ING RIGHT HAND IS GONE," Flocka wrote.
The "O Let's Do It" MC continued to vent over Twitter, writing, "Damn I feel dead" and "IM LOST" in reaction to the tragic news. A trial date for Young Vito has not been set.

Phillip Phillips moves up on 'American Idol'
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Phillip Phillips didn't follow any of the advice from his "American Idol" mentors ? and the judges loved him for it.
The 21-year-old pawn shop worker from Leesburg, Ga., defiantly wore gray after style adviser Tommy Hilfiger deemed it too drab. He shrugged off musical mentor Diddy's mandate to dance.
And he turned out a growling "Movin' Out" during an evening of Billy Joel tunes on the Fox talent contest Wednesday that Randy Jackson called "one of the best renditions of that song ever."
"You took that song and you Phillip Phillips-ed that," beamed Steven Tyler.
Other singers who impressed the panel included 16-year-old San Diego student Jessica Sanchez with a touching rendition of "Everybody Has a Dream"; 28-year-old teacher Elise Testone, of Charleston, S.C., with a soaring take on "Vienna"; and 20-year-old alt-rocker Colton Dixon of Murfreesboro, Tenn., with a classic version of "Piano Man."
"You sing with pure feeling," Jennifer Lopez told him. "I had goosies from head to toe the moment you started."
Deandre Brackensick of San Jose, Calif., opened the show with "Only the Good Die Young," but it was 26-year-old disc jockey Erika Van Pelt of South Kingstown, R.I., who nabbed everyone's attention by debuting a shorter and darker hairstyle during her performance of "New York State of Mind." Lopez said Van Pelt's new 'do gave had "a Pat Benatar vibe."
Lopez wasn't feeling the delivery of "She's Got a Way" from soulful 19-year-old singer Joshua Ledet, of Westlake, La., though. She told the gospel singer that he needed to be "connected more to the lyrics."
She was more pleased with the twangy take on "Shameless" from 18-year-old country rocker Skylar Laine of Brandon, Miss. "You're not shameless," said Lopez. "You're fearless."
The panel later targeted the pitch problems that 18-year-old singer Hollie Cavanaugh of McKinney, Texas, experienced on "Honesty." They were also in agreement that the over-the-top version of "My Life" from 22-year-old nonprofit organizer Heejun Han, of New York, was entertaining but outlandish. Jackson called it a "good time" but admitted the vocals were "missing a bit."
"At some point, you've got to take it more serious," Tyler sternly warned the goofy Han.
One of the top 10 finalists will face elimination Thursday.

US companies lose as sanctions strangle Iran
WASHINGTON ?? Like everyone, Iranians need diapers. Fred Harrington has built a business by selling Iran the raw materials to make them.
The Redmond, Washington, businessman, who exports to Iran under a humanitarian license from the U.S. Treasury Department, says he is owed close to $3.8 million by Iranian companies who cannot pay him because of the latest U.S. and European Union sanctions.
He is not alone.
U.S. firms from major drug makers like Merck & Co. to mom-and-pop outfits like Harrington's American Pulp & Paper Corp. are finding it hard to get paid even for medicines and other humanitarian exports explicitly allowed by the U.S. Treasury, according to officials, sanctions lawyers and the companies.

"Everything from aspirin to multivitamins - you name it - it's all jammed up,'' said Cari Stinebower, an international trade lawyer with Crowell & Moring, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm, and a former counsel for the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
The payments gridlock is a testament to the effectiveness of the latest round of financial sanctions, which aim to force Iran to curb its nuclear program and which have made the Iranian banking sector even more radioactive for major global banks.
But they also undercut the long-standing U.S. argument that its sanctions are not meant to squeeze the Iranian people but rather the Islamic republic's leaders and their suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons.
"I am not against punishing Iran for being a rogue country but the United States, or the Europeans, when they start imposing sanctions, then they must consider, also their own companies,'' Harrington said.
Harrington, an Iranian American who changed his name from Farhad Fouroohi, had to lay off three people in February because of the payments delays, cutting his staff from seven to four.
Lawyers decry outsize impact
While a new U.S. law targeting financial institutions that deal with the central bank of Iran has garnered much attention, sanctions lawyers said the Jan. 23 blacklisting of one Iranian bank had a more immediate, sharp effect on humanitarian trade.
Bank Tejarat, Iran's third-largest bank, was "designated'' ? or blacklisted ? under a U.S. executive order targeting people and companies that promote the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction as well as their support networks.
The action has the effect of cutting them off from the U.S. financial system, along with any bank who deals with them ? a risk that many banks find impossible to take.
Over the last five years, the Treasury has blacklisted 23 such Iranian-linked entities, gradually squeezing Iran's ability to do business with the world.
Tejarat's blacklisting has had an outsize impact, sanctions lawyers said, because it had been the last major Iranian bank available for legal trade with Iran. With it now off limits, companies are having to sift through smaller banks to find some that can carry out the transactions ? which is no mean feat.
"That has had a huge ripple effect,'' said Douglas Jacobson, a Washington attorney who focuses on sanctions work.
"On the one hand, you can get a license. The government is saying, 'OK you can sell.' But the practical reality is that you can't get paid,'' he added.
The lawyer said one of his clients is out several hundred thousand dollars because of the Tejarat blacklisting and that he knows of several medical companies that have stopped exporting to Iran because of the payment problems.
"Where you had a small window of opportunity previously, that window is now almost completely closed,'' said Erich Ferrari, another lawyer who specializes in trade sanctions.
The decision on Thursday by Belgium-based SWIFT, the world's biggest electronic payment system, to expel all Iranian banks blacklisted by the European Union, may make it even harder to conduct transactions, sanctions lawyers said.
The United States has gradually tightened sanctions because of Iran's failure to answer questions about its nuclear program, which Washington and its allies suspect is a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says it is solely to generate power.
The sanctions became much tougher when President Barack Obama on Dec. 31 signed a law designed to choke off Iran's oil sales by threatening to cut off foreign banks from the U.S. financial system if they dealt with Iran's central bank.
Merck & Co., the world's third-largest pharmaceuticals company, said it has licenses to sell Iran products to treat diabetes, cancer, respiratory illnesses and infections.
"(Merck) has experienced a challenging situation in 2012 in terms of securing payments for goods shipped,'' said Merck spokeswoman Kelley Dougherty, adding the company was open to ideas to "facilitate exports of humanitarian goods, including medicines,'' in accordance with U.S. law and regulations.
Pfizer Inc, the world's largest pharmaceuticals maker whose flagship products include the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor, acknowledged challenges in getting paid for Iranian sales, saying it would work through them. Both Merck and Pfizer declined to provide details.
"There is some turbulence right now,'' said Pfizer spokesman Peter O'Toole, saying the company wished to ensure that Iranian patients have access to needed medications. "If we have to work through a little turbulence, that's what we'll do.''
A Treasury Department official who spoke on condition of anonymity said its approach on humanitarian exports to Iran had not changed, though he did not directly address questions about the difficulty that U.S. companies were having getting paid.
"There's been no decrease in applications to OFAC to export humanitarian items to Iran,'' the spokesman added. "The recent sanctions imposed on Iran have not changed our approach to the export of food, medicine and medical devices to Iran.''
For companies such as Pfizer or Merck, exports to Iran are a tiny fraction of their worldwide business.
If ordinary Iranians ultimately suffer shortages of drugs and medical devices, the Iranian government may use it to score public relations points with their own people against the West, much as former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein did in Iraq.
"They need to defend their position to their own population. They need to continue to create this image of an international community that is implacably aligned against the interests of a defenseless Iran,'' said Suzanne Maloney, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution's Saban Center for Middle East Policy.
"This kind of imagery would play into that and it'll have a certain resonance among Iranians who have a long experience with sanctions, resent the impact of sanctions on ordinary citizens and believe ... the government is well able to insulate itself.''
'Washington's ears clogged'
The United States bars virtually all trade with Iran. It cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 1980 after Iranian students seized its embassy in Tehran and ultimately held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days.
Last year, the United States exported only $229.5 million worth of goods to Iran.
"Woodpulp and pulpwood,'' which includes the raw material for diapers, accounted for $57.9 million, followed by $50.1 million for pharmaceuticals, $29.5 million for plastics, $23.4 million for unmanufactured farm products and $22 million for medical devices, according to U.S. Commerce Department data.
Under U.S. law, the export of diapers to Iran is not allowed but the export of fluff pulp, their key component, is, creating an opportunity for Harrington to sell it to Iran.
Of the $26.6 million in sales his company had last year, Iran accounted for roughly 70 percent.
The impact has been so big that Harrington wrote Obama a plaintive letter on Feb. 9, saying the latest U.S. sanctions "have virtually stopped our business overnight.''
"We would appreciate your comments and any suggestions as to what we could possibly do at this point,'' Harrington wrote.
"From our perspective, it would seem that there is nothing left to be done except to close our doors.''
Harrington, who argues there should have been a "wind-down'' period to clear existing payments, has received no reply.
"We have not received any reaction and I don't expect to,'' he said. "Washington's ears are clogged. They don't hear it at all.''

An exploding star known as a Type Ia supernova plays a key role in our understanding of the universe. Studies of Type Ia supernovae led to the discovery of dark energy, which garnered the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. Yet the cause of this variety of exploding star remains elusive.
All evidence points to a white dwarf that feeds off its companions star, gaining mass, growing unstable, and ultimately detonating. But does that white dwarf draw material from a Sun-like star, an evolved red giant star, or from a second white dwarf? Or is something more exotic going on? Clues can be collected by searching for "cosmic crumbs" left over from the white dwarf's last meal.
In two comprehensive studies of SN 2011fe - the closest Type Ia supernova in the past two decades - there is new evidence that indicates that the white dwarf progenitor was a particularly picky eater, leading scientists to conclude that the companion star was not likely to be a Sun-like star or an evolved giant.
"It's hard to understand how a white dwarf could eat itself to death while showing such good table manners," said Alicia Soderberg of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
Soderberg and her colleagues examined SN 2011fe with a suite of instruments in wavelengths ranging from X-rays to radio. They saw no sign of stellar material recently devoured by the white dwarf. Instead, the explosion occurred in a remarkably clean environment.
"This white dwarf was a tidy eater," said Laura Chomiuk of the CfA, lead author of one of the two papers.
Additional studies using NASA's Swift satellite, which examined a large number of more distant Type Ia supernovae, appear to rule out giant stars as companions for the white-dwarf progenitors.
Taken together, these studies suggest that Type Ia supernovae likely originate from a more exotic scenario, possibly the explosive merger of two white dwarfs.

An exploding star known as a Type Ia supernova plays a key role in our understanding of the universe. Studies of Type Ia supernovae led to the discovery of dark energy, which garnered the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. Yet the cause of this variety of exploding star remains elusive.
All evidence points to a white dwarf that feeds off its companions star, gaining mass, growing unstable, and ultimately detonating. But does that white dwarf draw material from a Sun-like star, an evolved red giant star, or from a second white dwarf? Or is something more exotic going on? Clues can be collected by searching for "cosmic crumbs" left over from the white dwarf's last meal.
In two comprehensive studies of SN 2011fe - the closest Type Ia supernova in the past two decades - there is new evidence that indicates that the white dwarf progenitor was a particularly picky eater, leading scientists to conclude that the companion star was not likely to be a Sun-like star or an evolved giant.
"It's hard to understand how a white dwarf could eat itself to death while showing such good table manners," said Alicia Soderberg of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA).
Soderberg and her colleagues examined SN 2011fe with a suite of instruments in wavelengths ranging from X-rays to radio. They saw no sign of stellar material recently devoured by the white dwarf. Instead, the explosion occurred in a remarkably clean environment.
"This white dwarf was a tidy eater," said Laura Chomiuk of the CfA, lead author of one of the two papers.
Additional studies using NASA's Swift satellite, which examined a large number of more distant Type Ia supernovae, appear to rule out giant stars as companions for the white-dwarf progenitors.
Taken together, these studies suggest that Type Ia supernovae likely originate from a more exotic scenario, possibly the explosive merger of two white dwarfs.

Common medicines may cut cancer drug potency: study
(Reuters) - Many patients taking a widely prescribed class of oral cancer drugs are also using a variety of medications that could reduce the effectiveness of the cancer treatment or increase its toxic side effects, according to research by Medco Health Solutions Inc.
For example, 43 percent of patients taking the highly effective leukemia drug Gleevec were also on another medicine that could diminish its efficacy, while 68 percent were taking something that could potentially raise the toxicity level, the study found.
Not surprisingly, the study found that the vast majority of the cancer drugs were prescribed by an oncologist, while the other medicines were typically prescribed by a primary care physician.
"More communication needs to take place across all doctors that are prescribing for the patient," said Medco's Steve Bowlin, who is presenting the study findings on Friday at the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics meeting in Washington.
The Medco drug interaction study looked at pharmacy claims of about 11,600 patients who had been prescribed any of nine oral drugs known as kinase inhibitors, used to treat a variety of cancers. They include Gleevec and Tasigna from Novartis; Pfizer Inc's Sutent; Nexavar from Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc and Bayer AG; Tarceva, sold by Roche Holding and Japan's Astellas Pharma Inc; Sprycel from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co; and GlaxoSmithKline Plc's Tykerb.
The medications that could potentially cause such adverse "drug-drug interactions" (DDI) include commonly used heartburn drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Nexium and Prevacid; steroids; a class of blood pressure and heart medications known as calcium channel blockers; and some antibiotics and antifungal treatments.
At the high end of the range, 74 percent of patients who were taking Glaxo's kidney cancer drug Votrient were also taking a drug that could increase toxicity, researchers said.
Fifty-seven percent of Tarceva patients were also taking a drug that could weaken effectiveness, more than for any of the other cancer treatments.
Sutent had the lowest incidence of potentially troubling drug interactions, with 23 percent of patients taking a medicine that could decrease its effectiveness and 24 percent on a drug that could increase Sutent's toxicity.
"The fact that one-quarter to 75 percent of patients on these oral drugs may not be getting the full benefit of their treatment or may in fact be putting their health at further risk because of another medication they are taking is concerning," Dr. Milayna Subar of Medco's Oncology Therapeutic Resource Center said in a statement.
The PPI drugs for heartburn and acid reflux were the most likely to alter the effectiveness and toxicity of Gleevec, researchers said. For the lung cancer drug Tarceva, steroids and PPIs were most likely to decrease efficacy, while certain antibiotics were most likely to increase toxicity.
Even though the Tarceva label cautions against using the antibiotic ciprofloxacin when taking that cancer drug, the analysis found that the two were co-prescribed for a significant number of patients.
"There are other therapeutic alternatives that could be prescribed that would not have the same potential for interaction," said study co-author Eric Stanek, who called for increased surveillance of patient prescribing.
The analysis also found that the overlap for patients taking one of the oral cancer drugs and a medicine that could cause problems was rarely for just a day or two.
"In many instances, 30 or 40 percent of the time people were on a cancer drug they were also on a DDI drug," Bowlin said. "On average, it was substantial amount of time."
Medco, a pharmacy benefit manager that is in the process of being acquired by rival Express Scripts Inc, offers a Drug Utilization Review program under which its oncology pharmacists can alert doctors about potentially troubling medication interactions.

It seems like it would be hard to miss the face of an actress morphing into another. But a new animation by psychologist Sebastiaan Math?t from VU University in Amsterdam shows that Natalie Portman can turn into Leighton Meester right before your eyes and you won't notice when there's motion in the scene.
In the first clip, fix your eyes on the cross in the centre of the video. As the changing faces rotate, you probably won't notice that they're morphing. But when they stop turning, the transformation becomes apparent. A second example shows that the faces themselves don't need to move to trick your brain. As you stare at a green dot in the centre, a rapidly-changing background makes you blind to the shifting face. When the motion stops, the creepy metamorphosis is obvious once again.
The illusion is a version of a novel brain trick, devised last year by Jordan Suchow and George Alvarez from Harvard University, which won first place at the Best Illusion of the Year contest. It occurs due to a phenomenon called change blindness, where you can completely miss an obvious change when looking at a busy scene. When nothing much is happening, your visual system is more sensitive to change, but as the action increases, a transformation needs to be more dramatic to be detected. "In a sense, we protect ourselves from being overwhelmed by too much change," says Math?t.
