Chaminade University?s president, Bro. Bernard Ploeger, SM, PhD, has been chosen to serve in Rome this July at the General Chapter meeting for the Society of Mary (Marianists). Bro. Ploeger received a vote of confidence from his fellow religious of the United States Province, which is comprised of approximately 500 brothers. He is one of 40 delegates from across the regions of the world where the Society ministers. The delegates represent Marianist communities in Africa, Asia, and Europe, as well as in North, Central and South Americas. The Chapter?s theme for its July 3-22 meeting is ?Deepening of our Marianist Life for a Globalized Marianist Mission.?
?Being a delegate is a responsibility you must take seriously with duties that take precedence over other obligations,? said Bro. Ploeger. ?It is an opportunity to review the life and the mission of the entire Society as well as to ensure fidelity to our spirituality and charism.?
The Chapter acts as the highest legislative body for the Marianists. Delegates meet once every six years to strengthen the bonds of unity among members of the Society and to carry out legislative and evaluative functions.? It is responsible for electing the Society?s General Council, including the Superior General and its General Assistants. The Chapter is also responsible for articulating the Society?s missionary vision, long range planning, and setting objectives for the next years for the entire Society. In addition, delegates determine policies and set budgetary guidelines.
The Society of Mary ?the Marianists? is a Catholic religious order dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. It was founded in France in 1817 by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, a man dedicated to re-establishing a renewed Christian faith in the aftermath of the French Revolution. Almost 500 Marianist brothers and priests comprise the Marianist Province of the United States. They serve in communities and ministries from Honolulu to Puerto Rico and in Eastern Africa, India, Ireland, Mexico, Nepal and the Philippines.
