EPA Defends Chemical Testing of Low-Dose Hormone Effects

The agency is responding to a report written by 12 scientists who criticized the government?s decades-old strategy for testing the safety of many chemicals found in the environment and consumer products

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has concluded that current testing of hormone-altering chemicals is adequate for detecting low-dose effects that may jeopardize health.

This comes in response to a report written last year by 12 scientists who criticized the government?s decades old-strategy for testing the safety of many chemicals found in the environment and in consumer products.

The scientists specifically focused on a phenomenon called ?nonmonotonic dose response,? which means that hormone-like chemicals often do not act in a typical way; they can have health effects at low doses but no effects or different effects at high doses. The EPA frequently evaluates the risks of chemicals with tests that expose lab animals to high doses, then extrapolating to lower doses that people and wildlife encounter.?

Dozens of substances that mimic or block estrogen, testosterone or thyroid hormones are found in the environment, food, pesticides and consumer products.
The idea that these chemicals harm people at tiny doses remains controversial.

The EPA?s draft ?State of the Science? report, completed last week, found that such low-dose responses ?do occur in biological systems but are generally not common.?

?There currently is no reproducible evidence? that the low-dose effects seen in lab tests ?are predictive of adverse outcomes that may be seen in humans or wildlife populations for estrogen, androgen or thyroid endpoints,? the agency report said.
?Therefore, current testing strategies are unlikely to mischaracterize...a chemical that has the potential for adverse perturbations of the estrogen, androgen or thyroid pathways.?

The report was written by EPA officials with input from a team of scientists and managers from the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute of Child Health and Development that reviewed the science on endocrine-disrupting chemicals. It was signed by Robert Kavlock, the EPA?s Deputy Assistant Administrator for Science.

The federal team was commissioned last June in response to the scientists? report published a few months earlier by lead author Laura Vandenberg, a Tufts University researcher, and colleagues. Pete Myers, founder of Environmental Health News and chief scientist at Environmental Health Sciences, was the senior author of that report.

The EPA?s draft report will be peer-reviewed by a panel of the National Academies of Sciences.

The American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical companies, praised the EPA?s conclusion.

The EPA ?affirms what mainstream scientists have expressed for years: the purported scientific evidence for non-monotonic low dose exposures leading to endocrine disruption and adverse effects is, at best, very weak,? the industry group said in a prepared statement.

Vandenberg said although the debate over how to assess the risks of these chemicals remains, the EPA?s acknowledgement that nonmonotonic dose responses exist is a step forward, culminating years of science.

But she added that the EPA made some ?odd, and possibly political decisions? in the new report.

The EPA?s belief that high dose testing can predict safety at low doses ?flies in the face of our knowledge of how hormones work,? Vandenberg told EHN in an email. ?They [endocrine disrupting chemicals] are overtly toxic at high doses but act like hormones, with completely different actions, at low doses.?

In the 2012 report, Vandenberg and colleagues pointed to chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) ? which is found in polycarbonate plastic and some canned foods and paper receipts ? and atrazine, a pesticide used mostly on corn, as examples of chemicals that are inadequately tested to protect human health.

Stewart on 'Daily Show': 'I wanna come home!'

TV

Jon Stewart is in the Middle East working on his first directorial project, but the host of "The Daily Show" took a few minutes to check in on his program via Skype Thursday.

Temporary host John Oliver told Stewart that not much had changed on the show since the now-director started his 12-week leave of absence.

"The only key things are we play softball against the Mets on Monday, and Bruce Springsteen comes to play every Tuesday night," Oliver jested. "We didn't think they'd be things you'd enjoy."

Turns out they are things Stewart would enjoy.

"What?! That's my favorite musician! What?! I wanna come hoooome!" Stewart jokingly cried.

Earlier, a newly bearded Stewart told Oliver that he was "doing a phenomenal job" holding down the fort, but that he wasn't tuning in every night.

"I don't watch it all the time because it's too weird," Stewart said. "It's like watching someone have sex with your wife's desk."

The comedian said he missed his staff "like crazy cakes." Though he's enjoying his work on "Rosewater," an adaptation of Newsweek reporter Maziar Bahari's best-selling memoir "Then They Came For Me," he called the experience "weird as hell."

The film and memoir tell the tale of Bahari's arrest by the Iranian government in 2009 while he was there covering the election results. He was tortured for 118 days. After his October release, Bahari appeared on "The Daily Show" in late November to share details of his captivity.

avast! Mobile Security & Antivirus (for Android)

If you've been saving yourself for the free Android security suite that does just about everything, then friend, have I got a deal for you. avast! Mobile Security & Antivirus (free, Google Play) is from the familiar name in free PC and Mac antivirus, and packed with a huge array of powerful tools and fine-grained controls. These benefits outweigh its cluttered interface and lockscreen issues to take the Editors' Choice for free Android security apps.It stands next to Bitdefender?Mobile Security and Antivirus, our Editors' Choice for paid subscription Android security apps.

Anti-Malware
In truth, anti-malware is not where the Android security begins and ends. It's very unlikely that you'll encounter malicious software on your phone, but it is generally foremost on the minds of consumers.

When AV-Test rated avast! in June 2013, they found that the software detected 100% of the 2,545 samples the company used. Even better, AV-Test reports that it had no false-positive detections. This is a marked improvement over the previous test, which rated avast! slightly lower and with only half the sample size.

PC Mag relies on third-party testing labs for information about the accuracy of Android security app malware scans.

In my testing, I noticed that the accuracy came at a price. avast! took 66.06 seconds to scan just the apps on my Samsung Galaxy S III , and a whopping 132.2 seconds to scan apps and files. This is on par with TrustGo Antivirus and Mobile Security, but far longer than TrendMicro Mobile Security & Antivirus. Bitdefender?uses ultra-speedy cloud scanning that completes a scan in just over 10 seconds. Though the scans are long, avast! plays nice with other apps. With a scan running in the background along with 12 other apps, I didn't see any stuttering while playing Minecraft.

Also, though the scan is slower, it can be performed at any time and checks every file on your device. Bitdefender's cloud-based approach only focuses on executable files, and needs an internet connection to scan. Their approach is to only focus on the files that could be a threat, and is far more targeted than avast!'s brute-force approach. That said, avast! is well-positioned to guard against new threats that use novel attack vectors we've yet to imagine. It's also good for the kind of user who roots their device and side-loads everything.

avast! will also keep an ever-vigilant eye on your device, warning you as soon as it detects something it doesn't like. This includes during a malware scan; the app triggers an alert as soon as it detects something, and you can uninstall the offending app and pick up the scan where you left off.

Though many security apps can scan all the files on your device, avast! goes one step further with the File Shield. When active, File Shield will scan every file when used, either read from or written to. It's cool, but totally overkill and turned off by default as it eats into battery life.

Microsoft confirms Internet Explorer 11 is coming to Windows 7

Microsoft confirms Internet Explorer 11 will receive Windows 7 support

With Windows 8.1, Microsoft has pushed out a revamped version of Internet Explorer that is supposed to be significantly faster than its predecessor, not to mention the fact that it claims to be easier on battery life. Fortunately, it appears that the company fully intends to make IE11 available to Windows 7 users as well. While Microsoft opened up about this fact, it wasn't so keen to offer up any timing expectations. Thus, it's quite possible that we may not see it show up on Win7 until after it's had some time to bedazzle those who are already packing the latest and greatest version of Windows.

Philips launches HTL9100 Fidelio soundbar with detachable speakers

DNP Philips Fidelio soundbar

Philips announced the HTL9100 soundbar as part of its Fidelio lineup at this year's CES, and now it's available for $1,077 (£699) at retail. Like Voltron, the soundbar comes with detachable parts, particularly two wireless speakers that you can place behind or beside you for true surround sound. These battery-powered satellite components can run for 10 hours straight, after which they need to be reconnected with the main hub to be recharged. The 5.1 system plays media from devices connected via Bluetooth or HDMI and also features a separate wireless subwoofer. Compared to more affordable competition like Vizio's soundbar and the Sonos Playbar its higher cost is a hurdle, but the quirky wireless surround feature may make it worth trying out.

Lotus and Daniel Simon start Motorcycles division - Car Body Design

Lotus Motorcycles is a joint project of Kodewa, renowned concept designer Daniel Simon and the Holzer Group.

The bike will be named Lotus C-01 and ?will reflect a combination of lifestyle, design and high end technology.?

The Lotus C-01 will be a hyper bike with integrated racing technology, will be powered by a 200 hp engine and will make use of advanced materials like carbon, titanium and aerospace quality steel.

Daniel Simon, former designer for Bugatti, is responsible for many iconic concept vehicles in Hollywood film industry ? among these is the ?Lightcycle? in ?Tron: Legacy? and the ?Bubbleship? used by Tom Cruise in the recent ?Oblivion?.

The collaboration between Lotus and the German designer began in 2012, when he created the black and gold livery of the Lotus LMP2 sports cars.

The designer commented: ?With the Lotus C-01, we have only one ambition: to create a unique state-of-the-art machine that carries its brutal forces with elegance and style, a high-tech monster in a tailored suit. The C-01, with all its top notch components and materials, is first and foremost emotional, heartbreaking, at times playfully retro, and always clearly a Lotus. Lotus is a glamorous name with a rich history, and the C-01 celebrates it proudly: the shapes of the marvelous Lotus 49 were a main inspiration, and all color schemes pay homage to iconic Lotus racing liveries, such as the dashing black and gold. The intersection of past and future never fails to fascinate, and so does the unique idea of the C-01.?

The first images of the Lotus C-01 Motorcycle are expected to be revealed in the next few weeks.

Technical Partners

Kodewa has recently built the new sports car Lotus T128 LMP (Le Mans Prototype) and is running the Lotus LMP2 program in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

The team of Kodewa comprises of experts with a lot of knowledge and experience not only in endurance racing but also Formula 1, DTM and lower formulas.

Within the Holzer Group, the Performance GmbH is involved in the development process. The components made of titanium, carbon fibre and aerospace steel will be produced by RPC GmbH, which is also part of Holzer Group and Kodewa. Latest CNC machines linked with CAM workstations ensure highest precision and optimal workflow of the complex procedures. Because of quality inspections before, during and after the production process, a safety-related and faultless production is ensured.

PST: Peaking Timbers defeat FC Dallas

In a brilliantly exciting match that featured 37 shots, it was the most unlikely one that picked up the huge three points for Portland.

Darlington Nagbe?s turn-around shot smashed the top corner of the net, and Dallas could do nothing to bring it back level, seeing their lead in the Western Conference sit at just one point.

Despite just the one goal, the match was entertaining to say the least, with goalkeeping at a world-class level and dangerous set-pieces dotting the landscape.

So what did this delightful two hours learn us?

1) Portland is peaking at the right time

It probably should have been more than just a one-goal gap between the teams as Diego Chara was stoned twice by Raul Fernandez and stuck a one-on-one chance wide, but the Timbers absolutely deserved the three points.

The new Western Conference leaders haven?t lost since March 9. It?s a real accomplishment that their unbeaten streak, which now sits at 13 matches, is still going strong ? they?ve beaten the teams they should by scorelines they should (Portland 3-0 Chivas USA), salvaged gritty draws with tough opponents on the road (A surging Chicago 2-2 Portland), and picked up clutch wins against top teams when given the chance (Portland 1-0 FC Dallas, Kansas City 2-3 Portland).

With three straight away league matches before tonight, they picked up 5 points.? The home shutout streak is up to over 480 minutes now, and even the most potent offenses can?t find an answer to Donovan Ricketts and his gang in front of goal.

Portland are in the middle of a stretch where they have to face 4 playoff-position teams in 6 matches, and the other two are in 6th place, plus Chicago.? So that?s 6 top-6 clubs in 6 matches, plus Chicago. ?They? always say peak at the end of the season, but by playing their best soccer yet during this stretch, it?s playing out perfectly for the Timbers.

2) Anyone is vulnerable when a team is missing players

Dallas?s ?Big 3? at the top were missing, and it showed.? With Blas Perez on international duty with Panama and Kenny Cooper few home to take care of a family emergency, Eric Hassli only lasted 8 minutes before his back injury took its toll.? That left David Arturo Ferreira and Je-Vaughn Watson to roam the attacking third, and it didn?t work out so well.

Let?s not take away from what Donovan Ricketts did between the sticks, as he was a major part of Portland?s win, stopping what chances the replacements were able to muster.? But the Dallas buildup was seriously lacking at the front end, and it showed.

3) It?s the Western Conference?s season to lose

The top 3 clubs in the Western Conference this season have picked up 20 points from 13 matches against the East.? The top 3 clubs in the Eastern Conference have just 15 points in 11 matches.? That?s not a huge difference, but if it weren?t for Montreal, they?d have just 5 points in 7 matches.

The Western Conference has beaten up on each other, but this is their season to drop the ball.

Climate Change Getting Worse by the Minute

DEAR ABBY: I am 25, and my boyfriend and I have been together since high school. We have now decided to take our relationship to the next level by living together. When I brought up the idea to my mother a few months ago, she was against it. She said if I do this it will change my relationship with her. My boyfriend and I are college graduates, have good jobs and are self-supporting. If things work out between us, we will most likely be getting married next year.I am an only child and I don't want to hurt my mother or have our relationship change, but I want to be able to live my own life. ...

Key issues facing Iran

The following are the main domestic and international issues facing Iran's incoming president, Hasan Rowhani:

___

NUCLEAR QUESTION: Four rounds of revived talks between Iran and world powers since last year have produced no important headway in Tehran's impasse with the West. The U.S. and allies worry Iran's uranium enrichment could lead to atomic weapons, which could shift the balance of power in the region and give allies such as Lebanon's Hezbollah access to nuclear material. Iran denies it seeks nuclear arms, often citing a religious edict by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rejecting such weapons and saying it only seeks nuclear reactors for energy and medical applications. But it refuses to consider giving up any part of the "nuclear cycle," which includes processing and enriching uranium. Israel has said it keeps options open to attack Iran's nuclear sites, but Washington and other Western allies appear committed for now to a combination of diplomacy and economic sanctions to pressure Tehran.

___

SANCTIONS: International sanctions led by the U.S. and European Union have sharply increased in recent years, targeting Iran's vital oil exports and limiting its access to global financial networks for trade payments. Oil sales ? Iran's main foreign currency source ? have been cut by more than half, although shipments still go to major Asian markets such as China and India under U.S. waivers. On July 1, the U.S. could put in motion tighter sanctions seeking to limit gold sales to Iran, which have become a critical financial lifeline. Much of the gold trade has flowed through U.S. allies Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Iranian leaders claim they can ride out sanctions through a "resistance economy" that encourages domestic manufacturing and sale of refined petroleum products, which are not covered by sanctions.

___

ECONOMY: Iran's economy has been locked in a downward spiral from a mix of sanctions and domestic fiscal mismanagement, blamed on outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's policies of subsidies and handouts. The national currency, the rial, has plummeted in value from about 10,000 to the U.S. dollar two years ago to just under 35,000. This has driven up inflation, with prices for some goods tripling. Unemployment is officially at 13 percent, but most economists believe it could be more than twice that figure.

___

OPPOSITION: Years of widespread crackdowns have left the opposition movement shattered and without a guiding hand. Authorities have placed under house arrest the leaders of the protest movement after Ahmadinejad's disputed 2009 re-election. No serious attempts have been made to mobilize street demonstrations since early 2010. In the intervening years, Iran's Revolutionary Guard has grown in power and expanded its networks, including paramilitary groups known as the Basij corps that are present in nearly every town or neighborhood around the country.

___

U.S. RELATIONS: Despite hopes for a breakthrough after President Barack Obama's election in 2008, no significant progress has been made to end the more than three-decade diplomatic freeze. Iranian and U.S. envoys have had contact during nuclear talks, and the two countries found a common cause earlier this year to keep wrestling on the 2020 Olympic program after the International Olympic Committee dropped the sport from its core program. Many of the Iranian presidential candidates, Rowhani included, had suggested the possibility of a less antagonistic relationship with Washington, but any such decision rests with the supreme leader.

___

REGIONAL ROLE: The future of Syrian President Bashar Assad is a pivotal issue for Iran. Without Assad, Iran stands to lose its main Arab ally in the region. It also could cut the easy supply lines to Iranian proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon. But in other areas, Tehran has deepened crucial ties. Iran's influence spills out from both sides of its borders into Iraq and Afghanistan. It also has embarked on a military buildup to challenge U.S. and Gulf Arab forces. Iran has announced a series of purported advances, including drones and a fighter jet, but military analysts question the authenticity of some of the claims.

Detroit on Verge of Bankruptcy, Talks with Creditors Looking Awful ...

This week brought on a nasty credit rating downgrade from Standard & Poor?s for the City of Detroit. Now we have word that Detroit?s Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr has identified plans to a group of creditors, including banks and bondholders, as well as pension managers and unions. The changes, if they are approved and play out, will involve sacrifices by all parties. The long and short of the matter is that Detroit is at risk of becoming the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

The Detroit News has just outlined its story. Bloomberg TV has reported that the city is suspending payments to unsecured creditors today, starting with a $40 million obligation. Its story is not yet out.

The plan that was outlined includes a cessation of payments to unsecured creditors. Some creditors are even reportedly being asked to take 10 cents or less on the dollar. By our own measurement, this is a nothing less than a credit default. Is it a surprise at all that Detroit is ranked as one of the most dangerous cities in America?

By our take, owning Detroit debt has been a risky venture for some time. Now it is about to get a lot riskier. Even though ten cents on the dollar may just be a starting point, this sets a very bad precedent for what other cities can try to do to get out of debt. Detroit suffers from legacy health care and pension debts that are dwarfing current operational costs. Those same retirees have done nothing wrong to the system individually, but those costs are getting in the way of paying for existing services.

If you think that this is just a Detroit issue, many cities just cannot afford another recession that leaves huge holes in its pension funding as well as lower property tax receipts and lower sales tax receipts. The risks that Meredith Whitney brought up after the recession may have at least some more validity after witnessing this.

Stay tuned. This likely is going to become very ugly. By the way, do not expect financial creditors to just take a pass here and accept whatever offers are being made just because it helps out the city of Detroit and its retirees. The creditors gave the city the money, and they are sure as hell going to want back every penny they can get.

NVIDIA Tegra 4i shows up in mysterious 'brand' phone, promises Q1 2014 debut

NVIDIA Tegra 4i shows up in new 'brand' phone, will come to market in Q1 2014

While we've yet to see NVIDIA's Tegra 4i show up in any commercially available hardware, the company is still keen to remind us it's on the way. This time, the 28nm Cortex-A9 chip is making an appearance inside what appears to be a new, revised reference design or white-label phone. Spotted over on AnandTech, the mysterious device sports "brand," er, branding (we're guessing to be replaced by operator markings), along with a 4.8-inch 720p display, a 13-megapixel shooter and LTE / HSPA+ that would cover multiple (yet unspecified) regions. This does appear to be a little more than just a demo unit though, with NVIDIA telling AnandTech that the device will come to market sometime in Q1 2014, costing $300 - $400 sans contract in 8, 16 or 32GB varieties. Other Tegra 4i handsets are also said to be in the works, starting as low as $200 commitment-free.
