Best gifts for children don't require dazzling technology

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Even before the holiday tree is taken down, the child in your life begins to lose interest in the expensive electronic toys that set you back a big chunk of money and hours in long lines. Maybe you made a vow not to repeat this same gift-giving mistake again this year. So, how do you choose toys that have staying power?

Shop with Purpose -- the BEST way In a tight economy, gift giving doesn't have to be about high-tech shopping. Before heading out, consider the age, interests and aptitude of the child and reflect on what brings out a smile and encourages sustained play.

Try applying the BEST approach to gifting and look for toys that:

? Build physical or intellectual skills

? Entertain

? Stimulate the imagination

? Teach team-centered play and socialization

According to Dale Grubb, creator of the BEST approach and Baldwin Wallace University professor of psychology, "Most people have experienced the heartbreak of gift failure. Often, it is because the item is too highly structured. When a toy is overly limited in its function, it fails to sustain a child's interest. To help prevent this scenario, ask yourself, 'what could the child do with this?'

Variety, Creativity and Strategy = Fun "Variety is also an important consideration," Grubb continues. "While purchasing a gift that lies outside a child's established interests poses some risk of 'gift failure,' so does buying yet another set of colored pencils for the budding artist, or yet another baseball for the aspiring shortstop. "

Baldwin Wallace University Physics Professor Dr. Edwin Meyer, who teaches a popular problem-solving class, also encourages gifts that employ creativity and strategy. "Any game or toy where you see a child sitting there trying to figure out the best move is a good one." Meyer also endorses art supplies, "Crayons, paints, modeling clay, among other materials, offer wonderful learning opportunities and foster dexterity."

Participate Don't Isolate According to Grubb, gift-givers shouldn't assume their role is complete once the colorful wrap is discarded. "It's important for a child to be in an environment where creativity and learning are valued. Parents, family members, friends and caregivers need to be participants, too." He says engaging with a child in play tells the child that creativity and learning are important, encourages socialization skills and strengthens bonding.

Grubb cautions adults not to become over-zealous in coordinating activities. "Make sure the child is directing the play," he recommends. "When you 'play house' with a child, the child should be allowed to steer the creative play in any direction. Simply go along for the ride, even if that means spending time squeezed into a box from a long-forgotten toy," he says with a smile.

Or, in the case of an age-old favorite like Play Dough, be sure to buy plenty? enough for you and your budding artist to create masterpieces over and over again.

BEST Gift List

? Build physical and/or intellectual skills: sporting goods, games of skill, puzzles and trivia games

? Entertain: MP3 music players, puzzles, interactive video games

?Stimulate imagination: Art supplies, dolls, action figures, kitchen/workbenches and musical instruments

? Teach socialization and teamwork: Board games, playhouses and recreational games

Ed Meyer -- "the Problem Solving Prof" -- Favorite Games

? Rush Hour -- This single-player game involves freeing a red car from a traffic jam by moving other cars and trucks back and forth. It develops mental stamina and is a great introduction to the field of operations research.

? Guess Who -- An old game with many spin-offs. It develops creativity and problem solving ability. By asking creative yes/no questions yourself, you can spark the child's thinking skills. For example, "Does your person's name have an odd number of letters?"

? Set -- This card game is easy to learn and the whole family can play. It develops pattern recognition.

? SOMA Blocks or SOMA Cubes -- Introduced in 1936, SOMA blocks are seven blocks that can be arranged into a cube or an unending number of other shapes. Your child can spend hours completing a checklist of shapes.

All of these games can be found on the Internet. Several of them have online versions that allow a gift giver to test the game before purchasing.

Simple measures cut infections caught in hospitals

(AP) ? Preventing surgery-linked infections is a major concern for hospitals and it turns out some simple measures can make a big difference.

A project at seven big hospitals reduced infections after colorectal surgeries by nearly one-third. It prevented an estimated 135 infections, saving almost $4 million, the Joint Commission hospital regulating group and the American College of Surgeons announced Wednesday. The two groups directed the 2 1/2-year project.

Solutions included having patients shower with special germ-fighting soap before surgery, and having surgery teams change gowns, gloves and instruments during operations to prevent spreading germs picked up during the procedures.

Some hospitals used special wound-protecting devices on surgery openings to keep intestine germs from reaching the skin.

The average rate of infections linked with colorectal operations at the seven hospitals dropped from about 16 percent of patients during a 10-month phase when hospitals started adopting changes to almost 11 percent once all the changes had been made.

Hospital stays for patients who got infections dropped from an average of 15 days to 13 days, which helped cut costs.

"The improvements translate into safer patient care," said Dr. Mark Chassin, president of the Joint Commission. "Now it's our job to spread these effective interventions to all hospitals."

Almost 2 million health care-related infections occur each year nationwide; more than 90,000 of these are fatal.

Besides wanting to keep patients healthy, hospitals have a monetary incentive to prevent these infections. Medicare cuts payments to hospitals that have lots of certain health care-related infections, and those cuts are expected to increase under the new health care law.

The project involved surgeries for cancer and other colorectal problems. Infections linked with colorectal surgery are particularly common because intestinal tract bacteria are so abundant.

To succeed at reducing infection rates requires hospitals to commit to changing habits, "to really look in the mirror and identify these things," said Dr. Clifford Ko of the American College of Surgeons.

The hospitals involved were Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles; Cleveland Clinic in Ohio; Mayo Clinic-Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.; North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System in Great Neck, NY; Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago; OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.; and Stanford Hospital & Clinics in Palo Alto, Calif.

Nintendo Launches Wii Mini Console in Canada

The device is being shipped exclusively in Canada

CANADA ??Electronics firm Nintendo is to launch a pared-down version of its Wii console in time for Christmas - although it will only be available in Canada.

The launch of the Wii mini, pictures of which were published on its website today, had been widely anticipated in the technology press.

The console will go on sale from 7 December for C$99.99 (?62).

It comes just days before its next generation console, the Wii U, launches in the UK.

The Wii mini will have no internet capabilities and is designed to play only Wii games, meaning there will be no compatibility with earlier GameCube games.

It is, as the name suggests, smaller than the original Wii and comes in black with a red border.

"Wii mini is a great gift for the holidays that bring everyone in the family together to play. Wii Mini has a mini-price, but it's all about big fun," said Ron Bertram, Nintendo Canada's vice president and general manager.

It is unclear when the device will be available in other countries or why it is being launched exclusively in Canada at this time.

"It might be that it will only launch in Canada and Nintendo will see how demand goes," said Michael French, editor-in-chief at games industry news site MCV.

"It is also in the middle of manufacturing the Wii U, so it may only be able to make a certain amount," he added.

The Wii U device, which comes with a handheld touchscreen tablet-like controller, sold 400,000 units in the first week of sales in the US - lower than the 600,000 Wii consoles sold in the first eight days when that device launched six years ago.

The president of Nintendo America said that it was a stock issue rather than reflecting the popularity of the device.

Initial reviews of the Wii U have been mixed, with some unhappy that it was shipped with key features promised by Nintendo missing.

A social and interactive TV programming guide is due to be added in December, as will video-streaming apps from Netflix.

Behind the Presidential Curtain: Emmanuel Ndahiro, Kagame's Former Spy Chief Denied Entry Into USA Military Academy

?

Nov-27-2012 15:12printcomments

Col Dr. Ndahiro Emmanuel, a historical confidant and former spy of President Kagame has been denied entry to the US prestigious Fort Leavenworth military academy

Dr. Ndahiro

(Washington, D.C.) - After receiving the information regarding the attack of Rwanda in 1990, like many other young men of that time Dr. Emmanuel Ndahiro could not wait to join them and offer any help he could afford excluding becoming an active duty soldier.

He was young and energetic however as a newly qualified doctor he believed that he would be able to serve in different disciplines and not a frontline soldier. He quickly joined the high command as Paul Kagame?s personal Doctor.

Soon after Paul Kagame started advising him to join the army however Dr. Ndahiro refused repeatedly. President Kagame realised that Dr Ndahiro was not willing to join the forces even though he was given the choice to come back in his position as his personal doctor after the training.

He was eventually forced to comply with the training but with explanation that it is for the sake of his own security, self-defence and the use of guns in any case of emergency, due to living in danger zones. He was taken to attend military drills without his consent. That is how Dr. Ndahiro became a soldier and he served as Kagame?s Doctor until we captured Rwanda.

He had become one of the trusted men that surrounded Kagame and was promoted to Major from Captain after a few years. He was continuously promoted during his time at Kagame?s right hand side to the extent of making him a colonel. I remember while working among Kagame?s entourage Dr. Ndahiro was always around, a clever young officer who always presented smart on duty, always on missions taking care of Paul Kagame?s psychological as well as physical well-being.

Lt-Gen Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa

I remember just after Kagame was sworn in as president, he developed an upset stomach. This was something very confidential, as a driver who was close to my President I was able to see a glimpse of what was happening to him. The head of the cooks who prepared food for President Kagame had been detained in a different cell, with the rest detained in separate rooms for forty eight hours. This was to wait for Dr. Ndahiro to bring the results president Kagame?s samples to assess if he had been poisoned.

Dr Ndahiro was trusted and appointed in different positions after a few years, to even becoming the head of intelligence. Dr. Ndahiro was once too anxious to join the army and now enjoyed the post of shedding blood even to the extent of ordering killings. He sacrificed his profession working as a medical Doctor and violated the primary oath of a doctor ?do no harm.?

He ordered a number of killings including Andre Kagwa Rwisereka, even attempted to kill his former boss Gen Kayumba Nyamwasa. After failing to finalise this mission Col Ndahiro was sacked by his boss Paul Kagame.

Col Ndahiro who led the intelligence and security services (NISS) was fired by the Rwandan dictator General Paul Kagame. Col Ndahiro and Jack Nziza were accused of the attempted assassination on the Gen Kayumba. Sources close to the Rwandan Intelligence services indicated that the sudden replacement of Col Ndahiro was consecutive to the trials in South Africa where he was among the targeted suspected in the South African prosecution.

Apart from that his wife, Umulinga, had ganged with Kagame?s wife Janet Kagame working collaboratively together to stop Col Ndahiro from going back to his Ex-girlfriend Linda Bihire who had been appointed a minister after Col Ndahiro mislead Kagame about his personal relationship with her. Linda Bihire spent more than ten years in London and reportedly had a child with Col Ndahiro in the early 1990?s.

Ms Bihire had acquired a degree in Engineering and was willing to work for her nation; however when Col Ndahiro introduced her to Paul Kagame he never explained that he had a child to her and that she was among his ex-girlfriends. So when the group of women including Umulinga, Ndahiro?s main wife, with Janet Kagame approached the President and explained who Linda Bihire really was she was then sacked.

Dr. Ndahiro

Col Ndahiro?s misery continued when Linda Bihire?s cousin formerly known as Kanobana now Murenzi was appointed in the president?s office as head of finances, stole millions of francs and invested the money in transport service of his own. He was later arrested and is still in prison today.

Paul Kagame

Accordingly to reliable source close to the Office of the President and Rwanda?s Ministry of Defense, Col Dr. Ndahiro Emmanuel, a historical confidant and former spy of President Kagame has been denied entry to the US prestigious Fort Leavenworth military academy. Though a Colonel in the Rwandan army, many senior army officers confirm that Ndahiro is a civilian, adding that he has never attended any formal or informal military training like cadet.

One senior officer at the rank of General, when asked about this information, had a big hearty laugh, and then said: how did he become a Colonel in the first place? Adding that this guy (read Ndahiro) is a civilian, and during the struggle he was always with Kagame eating sausage and gossiping in Kabale and Mbarara while me and others were on the receiving end (fighting wars).

In 1990, President Paul Kagame, by then a Major in then Uganda army was sent by President Museveni to study at Fort Leavenworth military academy. President Kagame, under the orders of President Museveni ordered to cut short his military training to take over the RPF/RPA leadership after the death of the later Major General Fred Gisa Rwigema.

In July 2011, during an army reshuffle, Ndahiro was axed from the NSS (National Security Services) position and has since been replaced by Lt. General Karake Karenzi. During his office tenure at NSS, it is reported that Ndahiro was involved into many corruption deals, deaths of civilians and soldiers, while many others flee to exile for fear of his ruthless way of killing.

Kagame relegated him to a little known job of being in charge of history and research in the Ministry of Defense. According to his close friends, Ndahiro shared with them that President Kagame did not have the courtesy to inform him about his decision to drop him from the NSS juicy job. A family member told this reporter that Ndahiro collapsed in the office and was taken to hospital when he learnt from Rwanda Television and radio Rwanda that he had been dropped from the NSS position. Since then, he has never recovered from the shock and he is still nursing the traumatic experience.

The army leadership, as well as the entire Rwanda business community knows him as a very divisive and corrupt person, who has thrived through propagating lies about others. More than often, he has misled the people on sensitive issues that ended up backfiring and daunting the President?s image. An example is Rwanda?s past tainted with her neighbor Uganda. The fallout between Kagame and Museveni was largely because of Ndahiro?s misleading ?intelligence? information to Kagame.

For fear of living in limbo amidst pressure from those who hate him, Ndahiro made an attempt to solicit Kagame?s favor and consent to allow him for a senior command?s military training in Fort Leavenworth. The President gave his consent, but as soon as his name was submitted to the US authorities, he was rejected on grounds that he?s a serious threat to the lives of many Rwandans living in the US. According to the US department of homeland security, Ndahiro, like other military killing squad remain a threat to Rwandan citizens living in the US and abroad.

Col Ndahiro?s image faded slowly by slowly however remember he was reluctant to join the army, in other words if he had not joined the army he would be still a practising Doctor the job of his dreams. With no blood in his hands, with no blame of trying to kill his former boss Kayumba Nyamwasa. He would have been honest to his wife and his ex-girlfriend as he would not have had no reason to lie. He would not have even been in a position to seek entrance in military academy to start with.

Clearing the Fog Around Personality Disorders

For years they have lived as orphans and outliers, a colony of misfit characters on their own island: the bizarre one and the needy one, the untrusting and the crooked, the grandiose and the cowardly.

Their customs and rituals are as captivating as any tribe?s, and at least as mystifying. Every mental anthropologist who has visited their world seems to walk away with a different story, a new model to explain those strange behaviors.

This weekend the Board of Trustees of the American Psychiatric Association will vote on whether to adopt a new diagnostic system for some of the most serious, and striking, syndromes in medicine: personality disorders.

Personality disorders occupy a troublesome niche in psychiatry. The 10 recognized syndromes are fairly well represented on the self-help shelves of bookstores and include such well-known types as narcissistic personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, as well as dependent and histrionic personalities.

But when full-blown, the disorders are difficult to characterize and treat, and doctors seldom do careful evaluations, missing or downplaying behavior patterns that underlie problems like depression and anxiety in millions of people.

The new proposal ? part of the psychiatric association?s effort of many years to update its influential diagnostic manual ? is intended to clarify these diagnoses and better integrate them into clinical practice, to extend and improve treatment. But the effort has run into so much opposition that it will probably be relegated to the back of the manual, if it?s allowed in at all.

Dr. David J. Kupfer, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh and chairman of the task force updating the manual, would not speculate on which way the vote might go: ?All I can say is that personality disorders were one of the first things we tackled, but that doesn?t make it the easiest.?

The entire exercise has forced psychiatrists to confront one of the field?s most elementary, yet still unresolved, questions: What, exactly, is a personality problem?

Habits of Thought

It wasn?t supposed to be this difficult.

Personality problems aren?t exactly new or hidden. They play out in Greek mythology, from Narcissus to the sadistic Ares. They percolate through biblical stories of madmen, compulsives and charismatics. They are writ large across the 20th century, with its rogues? gallery of vainglorious, murderous dictators.

Yet it turns out that producing precise, lasting definitions of extreme behavior patterns is exhausting work. It took more than a decade of observing patients before the German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin could draw a clear line between psychotic disorders, like schizophrenia, and mood problems, like depression or bipolar disorder.

Likewise, Freud spent years formulating his theories on the origins of neurotic syndromes. And Freudian analysts were largely the ones who, in the early decades of the last century, described people with the sort of ?confounded identities? that are now considered personality disorders.

Their problems were not periodic symptoms, like moodiness or panic attacks, but issues rooted in longstanding habits of thought and feeling ? in who they were.

?These therapists saw people coming into treatment who looked well put-together on the surface but on the couch became very disorganized, very impaired,? said Mark F. Lenzenweger, a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. ?They had problems that were neither psychotic nor neurotic. They represented something else altogether.?

Several prototypes soon began to emerge. ?A pedantic sense of order is typical of the compulsive character,? wrote the Freudian analyst Wilhelm Reich in his 1933 book, ?Character Analysis,? a groundbreaking text. ?In both big and small things, he lives his life according to a preconceived, irrevocable pattern.?

Others coalesced too, most recognizable as extreme forms of everyday types: the narcissist, with his fragile, grandiose self-approval; the dependent, with her smothering clinginess; the histrionic, always in the thick of some drama, desperate to be the center of attention.

In the late 1970s, Ted Millon, scientific director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Personology and Psychopathology, pulled together the bulk of the work on personality disorders, most of it descriptive, and turned it into a set of 10 standardized types for the American Psychiatric Association?s third diagnostic manual. Published in 1980, it is a best seller among mental health workers worldwide.

These diagnostic criteria held up well for years and led to improved treatments for some people, like those with borderline personality disorder. Borderline is characterized by an extreme neediness and urges to harm oneself, often including thoughts of suicide. Many who seek help for depression also turn out to have borderline patterns, making their mood problems resistant to the usual therapies, like antidepressant drugs.

Today there are several approaches that can relieve borderline symptoms and one that, in numerous studies, has reduced hospitalizations and helped aid recovery: dialectical behavior therapy.

This progress notwithstanding, many in the field began to argue that the diagnostic catalog needed a rewrite. For one thing, some of the categories overlapped, and troubled people often got two or more personality diagnoses. ?Personality Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified,? a catchall label meaning little more than ?this person has problems? became the most common of the diagnoses.

It?s a murky area, and in recent years many therapists didn?t have the time or training to evaluate personality on top of everything else. The assessment interviews can last hours, and treatments for most of the disorders involve longer-term, specialized talk therapy.

Psychiatry was failing the sort of patients that no other field could possibly help, many experts said.

?The diagnoses simply weren?t being used very much, and there was a real need to make the whole system much more accessible,? Dr. Lenzenweger said.

Resisting Simplification?

It was easier said than done.

The most central, memorable, and knowable element of any person ? personality ? still defies any consensus.

A team of experts appointed by the psychiatric association has worked for more than five years to find some unifying system of diagnosis for personality problems.

The panel proposed a system based in part on a failure to ?develop a coherent sense of self or identity.? Not good enough, some psychiatric theorists said.

Later, the experts tied elements of the disorders to distortions in basic traits.

Here?s a summary of those reasons:

1. It?s a wonderful feeling when you wake up in the morning and find not only have you sold an ebook in your sleep, but there?s money in your Paypal account too! Of course, you need a plan to make sure you sell more than just the one! But the first few times it happens it?s incredibly exciting.

2. It?s a way to start selling your time one-to-one and start selling products one-to-many instead. Yes, I know it?s almost a cliche now, but it really is true. You only have 24 hours a day, but if you package up what you know as an e-book or e-course (information product) then you can sell an almost unlimited number of them. E-books are your first step.

3. E-courses and online communities (membership sites) are usually far more lucrative than e-books, but it really is best to start with an e-book. An e-book is a simple to produce as converting a Word file to a PDF and there are simple, inexpensive shopping carts you can use to take payments.

Having said that, actually writing your first e-book can be tricky because you need to find the time to do it and you have to deal with all the self-doubt that gets in your way. Then you have to add the extra blurb, get a good-looking cover and weigh up whether you should sell from your own sit or sell on other sites (e.g. Amazon?s Kindle). Best to get that first e-book out of the way now because the others will be far easier!

You can read how I turned an e-book into an e-course here: My first e-course ? Earn What you Deserve as a Mumpreneur.

?If you?d like me to help you write your first e-book and get it up for sale, join me on Thursday for my ?Write Your First e-Book? webinar. Click here for more.

Bomb hits Pakistani Shiite procession, kills 5

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) ? A bombing claimed by the Taliban killed at least five people and wounded some 90 others at a Shiite religious procession in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday, police said, as the minority Muslim sect observes the annual Ashoura holiday.

At least 30 have now died in five attacks on Shiites claimed by the Pakistani Taliban over the past five days, while about 100 were wounded in the run up to the holiday, which commemorates the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. The schism between Sunni and Shiite Muslims dates back to that time.

Sunday's explosion went off as hundreds of Shiites were passing through the main intersection of the city of Dera Ismail Khan, area police official Abdul Sattar said. An initial investigation suggested a bomb was planted near a shop along the procession route, he added.

Several of injured are in serious condition, said local hospital official Dr. Faridullah Mahsud, adding that three members of a paramilitary unit providing security were among the injured. Mahsud confirmed the five deaths.

The Pakistani Taliban, a Sunni extremist group, frequently attacks Shiites, who they consider heretics. Ashoura ceremonies are a prime targets, since they draw large crowds that march in processions to mourn the martyred Imam Hussein.

Qais Abbas, a Shiite survivor, said the procession was in the Chogla intersection of the city when the bomb went off. One of his relatives was in critical condition, he said, but he and others were moving the wounded to other hospitals that were better equipped.

"Here we are not getting proper care for them, there are not enough doctors or medicines," he said.

The same city was hit by a similar bombing on Saturday, which killed seven and injured 30. On Wednesday night, a Taliban suicide bomber struck a Shiite Muslim procession in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near Islamabad, killing 17 people. Also Wednesday, the Taliban set off two bombs outside a Shiite mosque in the southern city of Karachi, killing one person and wounding 15 others. Pakistani Taliban have claimed responsibility for all the attacks, with spokesman Ehasanullah Ehsan saying by telephone that the group will not relent and "looks forward to more ahead."

Authorities have deployed thousands of additional police across the country to beef up security for the holy day. Mobile phone service has been shut down in all the major cities to prevent such bombings, which officials say often use cellular phones as remote detonators.

Just What Is A Guarantor Personal Loan? | Beach Lungis

Just about all men or women checking out this specific commentary might have heard about the expression "guarantor loan" however could possibly not have an understanding of specifically what it all will mean. So what's a guarantor loan plus the way it might assist an individual? A guarantor loan is actually a funding contract which expects the guarantee from a 3rd party. Many people decide to use this particular category of loan program since they're not able to meet the criteria for a personal loan independently. Regularly, folks with zero and also sub par credit scores will need the warranty of a third party to actually obtain a loan. In cases where individuals who possess a below average credit standing make an application for a loan program, his / her financing request can often be turned away by the lending company basically because they might not be in the position to repay the loan. Even so, the lending company might provide financing when a guarantor is actually in a position to pay off the money whenever the applicant is not able to repay. Any of these loans normally involve printed agreements that must be signed by the debtor in addition to the guarantor.

There are different choices of guarantor loan product that people with negative credit scores and / or modest income can usually get. In view that a guarantor loan refers to a 3rd party reassurance for repayment of the borrowed funds, this specific title will be appropriate for practically all models of borrowing options. To provide an example, grad students nearly always will not hold any personal credit history which can ensure that it is next to impossible for them all to achieve a student loan. Even so, they can have a lending product if any individual having a very good credit record wants to become a guarantor. Folks with a small net income or just an undesirable credit rating would probably require a guarantor to get a home mortgage, personal financial loan, car finance and also other types of loan program.

The guarantor may be a relative or an acquaintance who may be wanting to lend you a hand. Now and then, firms can even consent to be the guarantor whenever you apply for a bank loan. To end up being a guarantor you need to carry a first-rate credit standing but also possess the capacity to pay back the finance if the individual is not able to pay up. Normally, the financial institution will certainly take a look at the resources together with the pay packet of your guarantor in advance of allowing a loan.

A spoken guarantee via the guarantor is not really satisfactory to execute a financing deal. Guarantor loan products are actually completed only after a thorough commitment is inked with the guarantor combined with the consumer. These printed forms offer the loan merchant the legal right to seek repayment from the guarantor if perhaps the borrower doesn't repay.

(AP) ? The Rolling Stones made a triumphant return to the London stage on Sunday night in the first of five concerts to mark the 50th anniversary of their debut as an American-oriented blues band.

They showed no signs of wear and tear ? except on their aging, heavily lined faces ? as frontman Mick Jagger swaggered and strutted through a stellar two-and-a-half hour show. He looked remarkably trim and fit and was in top vocal form.

The Stones passed the half-century mark in style at the sometimes emotional gig that saw former bassist Bill Wyman and guitar master Mick Taylor join their old mates in front of a packed crowd at London's 02 Arena.

It was the first of five mega-shows to mark the passage of 50 years since the band first appeared in a small London pub determined to pay homage to the masters of American blues.

Jagger, in skin-tight black pants, a black shirt and a sparkly tie, took time out from singing to thank the crowd for its loyalty.

"It's amazing that we're still doing this, and it's amazing that you're still buying our records and coming to our shows," he said. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

Lead guitarist Keith Richards, whose survival has surprised many who thought he would succumb to drugs and drink, was blunter: "We made it," he said. "I'm happy to see you. I'm happy to see anybody."

But the band's fiery music was no joke, fuelled by an incandescent guest appearance by Taylor, who played lead guitar on a stunning extended version of the ominous "Midnight Rambler," and Mary J. Blige, who shook the house in a duet with Jagger on "Gimme Shelter."

The 50th anniversary show, which will be followed by one more in London, then three in the greater New York area, lacked some of the band's customary bravado ? the "world's greatest rock 'n' roll band" intro was shelved ? and there were some rare nostalgic touches.

Even the famously taciturn Wyman briefly cracked a smile when trading quips with Richards and Ronnie Wood.

The concert started with a brief video tribute from luminaries like Elton John, Iggy Pop and Johnny Depp, who praised the Stones for their audacity and staying power. The Stones' show contained an extended video homage to the American trailblazers who shaped their music: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and others. The montage included rare footage of the young Elvis Presley.

The Stones began their professional career imitating the Americans whose music they cherished, but they quickly developed their own style, spawning hundreds ? make that thousands ? of imitators who have tried in vain to match their swagger and style.

The concert began with some early Stones' numbers that are rarely heard in concert, including the band's cover of the Lennon-McCartney rocker "I Wanna Be Your Man" and the Stones original "It's All Over Now."

They didn't shy away from their darker numbers, including "Paint It Black" and "Sympathy for the Devil" ? Jagger started that one wearing a black, purple-lined faux fur cape that conjured up his late '60s satanic image.

He even cracked a joke about one of the band's low points, telling the audience it was in for a treat: "We're going to play the entire "Satanic Majesty's Request" album now," he said, referring to one of the band's least-loved efforts, a psychedelic travesty that has been largely, mercifully, forgotten.

He didn't make good on his threat.

He also made fun of the sky-high ticket prices, which had exposed the band to some criticism in the London press.

"How are you doing up in the cheap seats," he said, motioning to fans in the upper rows of the cavernous 02 Arena. "Except they're not cheap seats, that's the problem."

But Jagger seemed more mellow than usual, chatting a bit about the good old days and asking if there was anyone in the crowd who had seen them in 1962, when they first took to the stage.

He said 2012 had been a terrific year for Britain and that the Stones nearly missed the boat, playing no role in the celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics, or the new James Bond film.

"We just got in under the wire," he said. "We feel pretty good."

Are we headed for another round of downsizing?

Business investments may be on the downswing, according to at least one economic indicator.?

By SoldAtTheTop,?Guest blogger / November 24, 2012

This chart shows the rate of industrial production for business equipment since 1999. The latest downturn may be hinting at a looming recession, the author argues.

Looking deeper into last Friday?s weak industrial production report, it appears that the ?Business Equipment? component is giving a clear sign of weakness as well as substantiating the business investment pullback noted?over the weekend by the WSJ.

In fact, looking at the data (click on the chart below for a full-screen dynamic version of the entire history of this data series) it?s easy to see that this series makes fairly sharp tops as the economy transitions into recession making it a useful contraction indicator.

Keep in mind though, while the latest results look like another solid harbinger of looming recession, the data is still fairly preliminary and subject to revision.
Another couple or few months of data will be required to determine if this pullback is simply a slowing of our halfhearted recovery or a more notable slide into a new recessionary decline.

US trucker nabbed with ammo in Mexico is freed

EL PASO, Texas (AP) ? A Dallas trucker imprisoned for seven months in Mexico on accusations that he had tried to smuggle in assault rifle ammunition broke down in tears Friday as he returned to the United States, saying he had at times given up hope.

Jabin Bogan claimed he was on his way to Phoenix to deliver the ammunition in April when he took a wrong highway exit and accidentally crossed the border into Mexico. The 27-year-old was arrested and taken to a Mexican maximum security prison.

"Some days I gave up hope. Some days I felt like God was, to be honest in my heart, like God was laughing. Like he was just punishing me for no reason. I felt like just giving up," he said during a brief news conference in El Paso, just minutes after arriving back in the U.S.

Bogan tearfully thanked his supporters, and said that at times he felt like taking his own life or someone else's.

"I was the only black American person in the whole prison. God brought me through and I made it," he said.

Bogan was released from the Mexican prison last week but had been detained by immigration authorities until Friday. He was found guilty of possession of military ammunition and sentenced to three years, but the ruling was later commuted for time served and a fine.

He was arrested on April 17 in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, just across the border from El Paso. Bogan said he was headed to Phoenix to deliver ammunition when he got lost and told Mexican authorities that a law enforcement officer at the border told him to continue driving across the international bridge.

Bogan said he attempted to turn back when he realized he had crossed into Mexico, but the layout of the traffic lanes prevented him from returning without first crossing into the truck inspection area in Juarez, where his truck was searched.

He said Friday that when he acknowledged to the agents he had ammunition, "they said, 'in this side of the country it's illegal to have bullets.' And that's when everything went upside down they took me in and never let me out."

During his trial, Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claim that Bogan had 268,000 bullets hidden under the floorboards of his 18-wheeler's trailer when he was arrested. Agents testified in June that Bogan was trying to make a U-turn back into the U.S. when they found the ammunition bundled on top of wooden pallets inside the trailer.

Bogan was arrested less than 100 feet from a giant billboard that reads, "no more weapons." The sign, unveiled by Mexican President Felipe Calderon two months before Bogan was caught, was made out of seized high-caliber rifles and ammunition.

Calderon has blamed lax U.S. gun laws for the flow of weapons into Mexico.

An appeal filed in August by Bogan's lawyer in Mexico, Emilio de la Rosa, reduced the charge from smuggling to possession of military ammunition. That allowed Bogan to be released after serving a portion of his sentence and paying a fine. He also was sentenced to supervised release, which he can do by mail.

The ammunition belonged to United Nations Ammunition. De la Rosa said the bullets would not be returned to the company.

A spokesman with the Mexican Attorney General did not immediately respond to a request seeking comment.

Bogan's attorney, Carlos Spector, maintains that Bogan made an honest mistake. But he said his lawyers decided not to fight the case, in part because of the potential political implications.

"He (De la Rosa) knew the options were get him out in six or seven months or sink him with a 30-year-sentence. Asking for a not-guilty sentence was impossible because the Mexican government had to get something out of this," Spector said.

The watch, estimated to sell for 6,000 pounds ($9,500) or more, is a diamond-set Rolex given to Presley by his longtime manager, Tom Parker. It is engraved, "Elvis merry Christmas your pal Col. Tom Parker." It was the last Christmas for Presley, who died the following year.

Madonna's corset by Jean-Paul Gaultier is of green silk with conical cups and beaded fringe, embroidered with candy stripes of opalescent sequins and peppermint bugle beads.

Christie's estimates that the corset will sell for at least 10,000 pounds.

Christie's previewed the sale on Friday. The auction will be on Thursday.
