Mimi Tanner's Blog: Married, Single, Divorced, Widowed - What???

You're filling out a job application, or it's your first visit to a doctor, and you're handed the usual forms.

The trouble is, they all ask you to describe your marital status!

Here are the choices: ?Married, Single, Divorced, or Widowed.

What??

So, if you've been divorced, you can't check the Single box?

If you're widowed, hey, thanks for reducing this life tragedy to a check box on a piece of paper!!

One day, that question will join the ranks of the "not allowed" questions on forms!

They really leave off a lot of possibilities, too.

They should have a check box for:

* Married but planning my escape!

* Single, but secretly seeing a married person.

* Single, and until they pass gay marriage in my state, single, but really married.

* Divorced - YEARS ago. ?Why do I still get dealt the "divorced" card?? ?Please!! ?We need a statute of limitations here.

I'm sure you can think of some other possibilities!!

I read a newsletter that proclaimed, "Don't take relationship advice from someone who is not in a committed relationship!!!"

The person who wrote that is very young, but I have heard this from people who are old enough to know better!

Well, I'm single at this writing, and I give relationship advice. A lot of people have found wonderful committed relationships, marriages, and love because of reading my emails and books.

My current single relationship status has no bearing on my IQ, except possibly to improve it.

Oh, wait a minute, I'm not single. Not according to those forms. ?I'm supposed to check the "divorced" box, officially. ?Wow, that sounds so contentious and negative; it's like being branded! ? Whatever the answer, it's a damned nosy question that has absolutely no purpose - except for giving numbers-crunchers fodder for statistics, like the ones that say, "Of the marital status categories, married men are the happiest, and married women are the least happy." ?I love that one...

I'm not in love right now, but I do expect to fall in love again and get married. I'm sure when that happens, I'll mention it and even share a photo. But I don't plan to report every detail to the whole world to prove something. ?Good advice and information stands on its own.

Contrary to what some people think, you don't prove your worth by being in a relationship all the time.

Check the census and welcome to the new century: ?lots of people live on their own... and it's far from tragic! ?The?unhappily married people envy those who are free and single more than anyone because they know what they've got!

I see a lot of women who just want to grab on to any guy because they can't imagine life on their own.

Then I see other women who will welcome love when one special person becomes a part of their world. ?These women write me often: they know what love is and what it isn't, and they don't need to settle just so they have their "man badge" or their "Mrs. Degree" to prove to some outsider that they're desirable or loving. ?

Usually, they already GOT their Mrs. degree AND the T-shirt at least once before, when it was so ultra-important to get married before they turned 30.

If they marry again (and get the masters Mrs. degree?) they want to know that the T-shirt will fit and survive years of washings. ?They're really not freaking out about being single to please other people's ideas of what makes them acceptable!

It's understandable when people who are really young think this way.... in due time they too will learn about the?complexities of life (and of making and voicing negative judgments about people).

It's much better to go down your life path without striving to "find someone" just for the sake of being part of a couple.

I hear from women who are concerned about getting married because of their biological clock. ?But we really can't force marriage, even if we'd like it. ?Marriage for that reason would not really be marriage for the love of a particular person. ?

I believe in love. ?But love is highly personal. ?It's a lot more than "Married, Single, Divorced, or Widowed"!

Surprise shower rains out BP out at Marlins Park

(AP) ? Rain washed out batting practice Wednesday at Marlins Park.

And yes, the $634-million ballpark has a retractable roof.

The roof was open when a rain cell developed over the ballpark nearly four hours before the start of the Marlins' game against the Washington Nationals. Showers fell for nearly 15 minutes before the roof began to close.

Curious players emerged from the clubhouse to watch as the grounds crew scrambled to cover the infield with a tarp. Puddles quickly accumulated on warning track, and thanks to a spillover from the field, muddy water soon stood eight inches deep in a photo bay near the Marlins' dugout.

The aquariums behind home plate were unaffected.

"The fish are laughing at us," a security guard said as the rain fell.

The weather cell sprung up unexpectedly, Marlins vice president Claude Delomme said, and there was a delay in closing the roof because of safety issues.

"We have to make sure everything has been clear," he said. "But as soon as we saw there was a cell right above us, we covered the infield. As long as we do that, that's all I care about."

Batting practice was canceled, just like old times for the Marlins, but the game was unaffected.

Because of South Florida's heat and frequent rain, the roof has been closed for all but four games. But it's otherwise open most of the time so the natural grass can be exposed to sunshine, and the field drains quickly after a shower, Delomme said.

"We designed it as an open facility, because 97 percent of the time it's open," he said. "For us to get rain actually is a good thing. It's going to happen a few times a year that we're going to get surprise cells."

Insides Trading: What Impact Will Facebook Have on Organ Donations?

Ask the Experts | Technology

People are turning to social media to bridge the chasm between those in need of life-saving organs and those who can help. This offers hope but also introduces risks

Since launching in February 2004, Facebook has proved highly effective at creating opportunities for the average Web user to create campaigns that reach a mass audience. Most recently such opportunities have extended to organ donation, an area that could benefit from the social network's attention?controversy over its recent initial public offering aside, Facebook's membership is more than 900 million and growing.

Indeed, with demand for healthy organs for transplantation growing worldwide, Facebook has already become a popular channel for people soliciting kidneys, livers and other potentially lifesaving organs. Earlier this month the social network began offering members the ability to identify themselves as organ donors on their Facebook pages and to locate state organ-donation registries if they would like to become donors.

Last October a team of researchers at Loyola University Medical Center began tracking how Facebook was being used as a tool for connecting potential donors with those in need of an organ. The researchers focused on kidney solicitations in particular and studied 91 Facebook pages seeking kidney donations for patients ranging in age from two to 69. Of the Facebook pages studied, 12 percent reported receiving a kidney transplant and 30 percent reported that potential donors had stepped forward to be tested to determine whether they were compatible, the researchers recently reported at a meeting of the National Kidney Foundation. One page reported that more than 600 people had been tested as potential donors for a young child.

There was a broad range in terms of how much personal information people disclosed. Some Facebook pages simply asked people to donate, without providing any other information. Other pages provided great detail about patients who needed kidneys, including explicit medical histories and family photos as well as emotional accounts of hospital stays, emergency room visits, financial problems and the difficulties of living on dialysis, according to the researchers led by Alexander Chang, nephrology fellow at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine.

The research findings also raised ethical concerns: 3 percent of the pages received offers to sell kidneys, mostly from people in Third World countries. Would-be donors typically asked for $30,000 to $40,000, even though selling organs is illegal in most countries. In addition, only 5 percent of pages mentioned the risks of kidney donation (such as possible internal bleeding and/or infection as a result of the surgery) and only 11 percent mentioned associated costs.

Scientific American interviewed Chang to find out more about his team's reasons for examining Facebook as a means of soliciting kidney donations, the potential impact that social networks could have on the organ-donation shortfall and the possible dangers posed by using Facebook to match those in need of an organ transplant with potential donors.

[An edited transcript of the interview follows.]

What inspired you to study social media?Facebook, in particular?as means for soliciting living kidney donors?
As a nephrology fellow, I became interested in this issue as the transplant waiting list continues to grow and is outpacing the donor pool (from both deceased and living kidneys). The only really growing segment of the donor pool is coming recently from donors not related to the patients receiving the kidneys, and it seemed to me that social media must be an extremely easy way for people to search for kidney donors, as people are connected via Facebook to large numbers of friends, family and acquaintances they would not normally interact with in person or even by telephone or e-mail. As I could find no research on the subject, I thought it would be important to characterize what people are currently doing and how they are going about doing it.

Are you and your colleagues also looking at other organs (the liver, for example) being solicited via Facebook?
We specifically looked at kidney donors, as this is my interest as a nephrologist but also because the issues of kidney donation are quite unique, as living liver donations do not occur very often (and incur more risk to the donor) and bone marrow donations usually entail very little risk to the donors.

What was your process for searching Facebook for kidney donors?
We created a search on October 3rd, 2011, and looked for terms including "kidney donor," "need kidney," "kidney donation," "seeking kidney," "find kidney" and "kidney search." We found 131 pages in English. Of these pages, only 78 specified the purpose of finding a kidney for a specific person. We found an additional 13 pages that had the purpose of finding a kidney for someone, linked from these 78 pages, giving us a total of 91 pages for our study.

What conclusions can you draw at this time about how much Facebook use contributed to making successful solicitations?
Since these are just publicly accessible pages on Facebook, certainly this is just a snapshot of how people are using Facebook, as Facebook gives users the option of making pages "private," and people may also be sending messages directly to their friends via the social networking site. Such messages would not be included in our study. Since we only studied 91 pages, and our information was only derived from what was shared by the Facebook page to the public, this work should be considered hypothesis-generating.

Euro zone bank safety net leaves holes unplugged

FRANKFURT/BRUSSELS (Reuters) - As the euro zone ponders a possible Greek exit, policymakers have not yet built a shield robust enough to prevent a bank run in one country sending others in the bloc deeper into crisis.

A push by the European Central Bank for the euro zone to stand behind struggling lenders is slowly gaining traction with government leaders but the bloc has yet to build backstops to prevent, or cope with, a sudden collapse of confidence in banks.

Last week, European leaders discussed pan-European means of supporting banks, measures the ECB hopes will include a bank resolution fund to deal with the fallout from the wind-up or restructuring of a failing lender.

Such a body would complement the 1 trillion euros of 3-year credit the ECB has lent in recent months to banks across the 17-country euro zone, which has helped oil the wheels of Europe's banking system where confidence is so low that most remain reluctant to lend to one another.

But a wave of withdrawals by depositors - either for fear that their government is too weak to stand behind its banks or that their country will exit the euro and switch their savings into a vastly devalued national currency - would represent a whole different scale of crisis.

Such pressure on Ireland's banking system prompted a national bailout by the International Monetary Fund and European Union.

Now investors are worried about the contagion effect a Greek exit from the euro zone could have on savers in other countries.

"Preventing bank runs in Italy, Spain and Portugal should be the top priority," said Berenberg Bank economist Holger Schmieding. "Policymakers need to make sure that the potential Greek precedent of a forced conversion of domestic euro deposits into a weak new currency would not spark a run on banks ... elsewhere."

The ECB is pressing the euro zone to set up a fund that would prevent this dangerous ripple effect, a message reinforced by ECB policymaker Joerg Asmussen last week.

"The recapitalization of a troubled bank by its government may lead to a deterioration of the government's fiscal position," Asmussen said. "The deteriorating fiscal position in turn further weakens banks' balance sheets, through their holdings of sovereign bonds.

"This feedback loop has to be stopped ... A European bank resolution authority and a European deposit insurance scheme are two elements that could be used to address the nexus between sovereigns and banks."

Any pan-euro zone deposit guarantee scheme would need to be large in order to stem ebbing confidence.

The typical national guarantee in Europe now covers the first 100,000 euros on deposit, something that would do little to reassure corporate investors with millions.

It was the decision by companies in Ireland to withdraw deposits that accelerated its banking crisis.

The question of how to shut down or restructure teetering banks has risen to the top of European policymakers' agenda as concerns grow about the impact if Greece were to leave the euro zone, and as problems deepen in Spain's large banking sector, which is laden with bad property debts.

But policymakers are far from setting up a backup fund, not least because European paymaster Germany, who does not want to support laggard banks in Spain, is reluctant to finance it.

WAITING FOR DRAGHI

In the absence of a resolution fund or insurance scheme to deal with a bank collapsing, many investors expect the ECB would act to head off a bank run or a similar systemic threat.

ECB President Mario Draghi has said the 1 trillion euros the bank released into the financial system with twin 3-year, ultra-cheap lending operations - or LTROs - in December and February avoided a major credit crunch.

In the case of Greece, the belief is that the ECB would act again to contain a bank run, said Clemens Fuest, a professor at Oxford University and a member of the academic advisory board of the German Federal Ministry of Finance.

"The expectation seems to be that the ECB will prevent it by providing whatever liquidity is needed," he said, adding that this could either be from the ECB directly or as emergency funding from the Bank of Greece with the ECB's backing.

Greece's four largest banks received some help this week, with the country's bank stability fund approving an 18 billion euro injection of bailout money to rescue them.

If this proves insufficient and contagion spreads to other countries' banking sectors, policymakers may rapidly have to dust off plans to provide guarantees to weaker banks or inject further capital - scenarios discussed in the past but on which there has been no agreement.

CAPITAL FLIGHT

The banking environment has steadily deteriorated, according to statistics from the Bank for International Settlements, which chart the flight of capital from the euro zone's weakest members.

Figures from December last year show a sharp decline in deposits from abroad held in banks in Greece from $160 billion in late 2009 to less than $80 billion.

Ireland's bank deposits from abroad fell from $905 billion to $471 billion over that time and a similarly sharp fall was seen in Portugal.

Households and companies have almost 11 trillion euros on deposit with banks in the euro zone, with over 3 trillion in Germany alone, according to ECB statistics.

One way to reinforce banks would be to allow the euro zone's rescue scheme, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), to inject capital directly into lenders - an idea which Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is pressing but which Berlin opposes.

Under Europe's existing arrangements, countries like Spain - should they require assistance with their banks - must apply for a sovereign bailout programme, a humiliation too far.

"Taking on the risk of a bank failure at a European level through the ESM is far preferable to the much greater risk of a sovereign default," said John Fitzgerald, of the Economic and Social Research Institute, a Dublin-based think-tank.

In the absence of that, Berenberg's Schmieding said were Greece to leave the euro zone, Spain should apply to Europe's bailout funds for aid to recapitalize its banks.

The ECB could cut interest rates and - together with national central banks - supply banks with liquidity, he said, possibly with new long-term loans.

"COURAGEOUS LEAP"

Some ECB policymakers are open to considering a further LTRO, sources close to the bank say, but they face resistance from orthodox policymakers already worried by the balance sheet risks the ECB has taken on with the first two operations.

Germany's Bundesbank has already said the ECB should not significantly increase the risks associated with providing liquidity to Greece, and believes the impact of a Greek exit from the euro zone would be substantial but "manageable".

Easing the requirements on the collateral banks need to put up to access ECB funds is another way the central bank could help lenders short of liquidity - but such a technical step will not help if they become insolvent and a systemic risk.

Draghi is pressing governments rather than the ECB to take the decisive action and delivered a stark message last Thursday, saying: "We have reached a point in which the process of European integration needs a courageous leap of political imagination in order to survive."

Craig Tomashoff: Techno Phobe

Trying to date online when you're a post-50, divorced suburban dad is kind of like settling in for a transatlantic flight, only to discover that the films they'll be showing star Adam Sandler. Both experiences are far from perfect, but you accept them because you don't have other options.

That explains my tolerance for the woman who, upon hearing I was a writer, asked me to do a story revealing how her jealous ex-husband had secretly implanted a tracking device in her uterus after drugging her. And why I stayed for the woman who brought another man with her to our date. Although after last week, I may finally be tapped out. That's when I received my daily list of suggested matches from an online dating site, and at the very top was someone I knew from the outside world, who has rebuffed my date requests for years now because she "just wasn't ready for a relationship." I appreciated the honesty, although it does seem a bit contradictory now given that she's on a dating website.

Shortly after that discovery, I did a search of my own and up popped the profile of a woman I'd met online and dated for a couple of months, until she broke it off by telling me it was still too soon for her to be seeing anyone. And yet, there she was as well, still checking her dating profile on an hourly basis. Granted, I've been out of the game for a couple decades, but I have to assume this is not a sign of someone opting out of dating.

This was pretty discouraging, but not because I'd been done in by the classic "It's Not You, It's Me" escape clause. No, what brought me down was the fact that I now knew the excuse was, well, an excuse. Twenty years ago, you could be shot down and pretend your rejecter was keeping herself off the market because there was no evidence to the contrary. Thanks to the Internet, however, such proof is readily and unfortunately available.

I feel like the Rip Van Winkle of dating, waking up after being out for a long time to find that modern technology has perverted the matchmaking process. Take the online dating sites, for example, which have made searching for a lifetime companion like trying to find a DVD on Amazon.com. Type in exactly what you're looking for and you'll find it. Convenient? Sure. Fulfilling? I don't know. I miss the mystery of waiting until you met someone to learn she likes bike rides at the beach, Roadhouse and Ethiopian food. Now, you know all that before you even communicate, which you might not even do if he/she doesn't meet your specs. Sure this eliminates the time and expense of incompatible dates, but it also takes the element of surprise out of the equation.

Facebook is another unfortunate technological crutch. For instance, after deciding I'd put too much personal data in my profile, I deleted some of it. That included my relationship status. Within minutes, I was getting messages from friends congratulating me. I asked them why. They informed me that they saw the post that "Craig Tomashoff is no longer listed as single." They assumed I'd finally found someone. As did the woman I'd gone out with a couple of times, who decided this meant we weren't exclusive. And we never went out again.

Then there was someone who, after we met for dinner, went home to post about what a great date I was. I woke up the next morning to several messages congratulating me on my new girlfriend. Who I never did go out with again. I'm not sure which was the bigger problem here, someone who felt compelled to share our evening together with the world or the friends who were monitoring my personal life that closely via Facebook.

And then there's the scourge of Google-ing. I still remember one of my first post-divorce dates, where we'd barely sat down to dinner when she started talking to me about some of the places I'd worked. When I asked how she knew my resume, she informed me that it was now customary to Google anyone you're going out with so a) you could see if you'll be compatible and b) if they've ever appeared on "America's Most Wanted".

I started to do it too, carefully studying every Facebook timeline or LinkedIn profile before any coffee meet-up. The upside was, I could decide whether or not I really wanted to go through with the meeting after seeing her drunken birthday party photos or learning she once contributed money to Newt Gingrich's campaign. The downside, however, was that I'd allowed the anticipation of first dates to become bigger than the dates themselves.

Once that occurs, the level of expectation (whether it's positive or negative) rises and makes it impossible to relax and let whatever is going to happen simply happen. The solution, of course, would be to just go web-less when it comes to dating. Which makes as much sense as, say, swapping your DVR out to put your old VHS machine back in. We're too far down the road to turn things around now. Using the Internet to help with relationships is instinctual now, proven by my first reaction after getting dumped recently -- which she did via text, yet another technological advancement that allows us to share emotional decisions without having to actually confront the emotions. As soon as I got her news, I went straight to Facebook and de-friended her. What better revenge is there these days?

The Internet has certainly contributed some positive things when it comes to our social lives. Without it, where would we ever get our pornography? Still, I miss how things used to be, when it was more about the date and less about the data. So, if and when I find someone who'll go out with me, I vow to get back to a simpler time by going Google-less and Facebook-less until after we meet in the real world. And I just hope she enjoys the evening of butter churning I've got planned.

Why you should create a web video series and how to get started ...

Guest post by Tristan Pelligrino

One of the biggest challenges in marketing today involves the process of attracting?potential clients and encouraging them to visit your website. However, getting potential?clients to actually come back to your website could be an even greater challenge for some businesses. A?web video series might be a good addition to an overall marketing?strategy.

Why is a web video series effective?

  • A series is engaging ? When you have the ability to create shorter content, youraudience is engaged for a larger percentage of time.
  • Short videos are focused ? Most of us know that ?content is king.? That?s why videoallows you to create small, bite-sized pieces of content with a focus. A picture is worth a?thousand words?.video is worth even more.
  • A web video series is flexible ? Once you start to develop a series of content, youhave the ability to place the videos in a variety of locations. A video can be referenced?in an email, featured on highly-targeted landing pages and embedded within interior?pages of your website. Video makes sense in a lot of places and enhances your?presence online.
  • Web videos are shareable ? According to an infographic released by Digital?Buzz shows?64% of Americans stream video at work. The same study stated that 92% of people forward content because it is interesting and video is at the top of the list.

How to get started with developing a web video series

  • Review content ? One of the most likely places to find a source for a web videoseries is looking at existing content. Do you have a series of tips listed on your site??Do you have a page dedicated to ?frequently asked questions?? What about reviews or?testimonials? Find content that is related, but can be conveyed in short vignettes.
  • Brainstorm ? Reach out to others in your organization to see what types of questionsthey get from customers. You can also organize an off-site meeting to discuss some?creative ways to develop ongoing content that answers questions about your product. One of the more well-known cases is Will it Blend? which is sponsored by Blendtec. Blendtec developed a series that captures how?different household items could be blended.
  • Consolidate production ? Once you?ve determined your concept and have foundyour partner, make sure to maximize production. The video production phase is the?most expensive part of a web video project. So, try to find a time where you can film a?range of videos at one time.
  • Develop a release schedule ? Now that you have all of the content produced, it isimportant to adhere to a schedule. Setup a consistent schedule for your videos and?make sure to package the content within your blog or email marketing campaign.

Models to follow

Sometimes it is helpful to see what others are doing and find inspiration. So, we?ve?included a few samples below that highlight how companies are effectively using web?video series within their content strategy.

      • Nissan ? A large corporation currently featuring a web series about their newestracecar, the Delta Wing. You can checkout the first video embedded below.
      • Lifehacker ? This series, featured?on Revision 3, features tips and tricks on so many cool things. The series demonstrates how to troubleshoot computers and even how to brew coffee.
      • Home Depot ? This large retailer develops a how-to series?aimed to help customers with their biggest homeimprovement challenges.

Ultimately, a web video series can be a key asset to reaching your audiences?.on?a consistent basis.

Celia Larkin: Sinn Fein takes aim and continues its military-like assault on State power

I've been to many an ard fheis. All Fianna Fail ones, of course. But somehow I thought that Sinn Fein's would be different.

The similarity, familiarity even, of the surrounding, the backdrops, posters, passes, information points -- even the structure of the event -- were eerily the same.

The difference lay in the precision about the organisation of this ard fheis, which made you feel as if you were at a military conference. Every entrance from the sprawling maze that houses the conference centre in Killarney had a checkpoint. No matter how many times you passed in and out of the main area, no matter how familiar you became with the personnel manning the checkpoints, your belongings were always searched. There was no room for error.

Checkpoints aside, one felt that there was a concerted effort to be mainstream. Little reference to the 'Troubles' other than the visuals in the hunger-strike exhibition housed on the first floor. The northern conflict has been consigned to history.

Reconciliation and relationship-building in the march towards a united Ireland are the order of the day, with Martin McGuinness's address outlining the conciliatory advances made towards an inclusive debate with unionists in the North.

However, the conciliatory tone stopped short of extending to the governing parties in the South.

Like a hunter watching its prey and identifying the weakest quarry in the pack, Martin Ferris in his opening speech pounced on the Labour Party for its part in the savage spending cuts that have affected every working-class and middle-class home. There was a sense of, "we've dealt with Fianna Fail, now let's move on to our next target".

Despite the similarity to Fianna Fail in the structure of the party and indeed the structure of the ard fheis itself, there was an undercurrent that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Deference to individuals I didn't recognise. In fact, there was a distinct lack of attention paid by the delegates to most of the elected and publicly recognisable individuals in the party.

Apart from Ferris and McGuinness, who were most definitely serious power brokers, the other public representatives were left, for the most part, to their own devices.

No handshaking. No backslapping. No clamouring for photos to show the family back home. They were, to all intent and purposes, treated as just more cogs in the wheel of a well-oiled machine.

You had to be in the know to know who was who and the few individuals that commanded respect and merited accompaniment by 'the boys' were not instantly recognisable to an outsider like me.

The opening session on Friday night had an air of a party at ease with itself. On the lawn outside, the party leader, Gerry Adams, flanked by Martin Ferris and Mary Lou McDonald, sweated in the blazing sunshine while fielding questions about his leadership and launching the perfunctory attack on the Taoiseach for not succumbing to pressure for a leaders' debate on the Stability Treaty.

However, his controlled veneer did slip for one significant second when he irritably snapped that he would decide when to step down as party leader. He intended on staying until after 2016.

Democracy is self-evidently new to him -- "tiocfaidh ar la" -- in the sense that succeeding to the leadership didn't seem to be something the bright younger folk could aspire to until Gerry was good and finished with the position. Which wasn't going to happen until after the anniversary of 1916.

According to the party stalwart stewarding the ard comhairle elections, the leadership is a position to which a person is elected by the party membership. So Gerry Adams was squarely in the wrong position when he treated it as a personal entitlement. He was fast, though, and recovered himself almost immediately with the addendum: "The party and I will know when it's the right time for me to leave". This was in deference to the fact that it's not actually his call.

It's been a while since I've come face to face with Gerry Adams but he seems to have lost some of his sharpness. The surefootedness I witnessed during the peace process is now sporadic, rather than constant. In sharp contrast, Martin McGuinness has lost none of his awareness, instinct and perspicacity.

In the conference hall itself, the order of the day was to build the party at all costs. I spoke to one young man who had just joined the party.

"Why Sinn Fein?" I asked.

"I like their policies," he said confidently.

"Like what?" I asked. "Which Sinn Fein policy do you like best?"

He fumbled his way into a brief silence. "I just can't stand any of the other parties," he eventually said, oblivious to the fact that he personifies the threat to all of those other parties.

Disenchantment, rather than policy, can be a great recruiting officer and that's confirmed by today's opinion poll. Given its much improved showing, Sinn Fein could have been forgiven for showing a little triumphalism.

However, there were no jubilant displays and no self-congratulations. Just an easy optimism and a confident certainty as they went about their business of picking off their prey and mopping up disenchanted voters with military precision.

On a lighter note and in keeping with the military theme, I smiled to myself when I heard one guy on the door say: "Just show your passes, lads, and shoot straight through." If Labour doesn't get its act together soon it will be the next party to be shot through.

One down, one to go ...

Yes, the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis had a lot that was familiar about it. But at the same time, it was oh so very different. It was the ard fheis of a party ready to take the next hill. Up and over -- and into power within a decade.

Mich. wildfire grows to more than 21,000 acres

A wildfire in Michigan's Upper Peninsula grew by 17 percent to more than 21,000 acres Saturday as officials warned of tough conditions and welcomed help from water-dumping aircraft from the Michigan National Guard.

Wind gusts were predicted at 15 mph and high temperatures were in the 60s in a dry, remote part of the state where access has been tricky because there are few roads. Tahquamenon Falls State Park, a popular destination for campers seven miles from the fire, was closed.

The fire, known as the Duck Lake Fire, was 20 percent contained in Luce County, about 75 miles northeast of the Mackinac Bridge, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said. The fire was described as long and narrow, stretching 11 miles north to Lake Superior.

Fewer than 100 people have been evacuated, said Dean Wilson, a spokesman for the fire management team.

PhotoBlog: Michigan wildfire?grows to more than 21,000 acres

More than 40 structures have been threatened and at least six are lost. It's not clear whether they were homes or outbuildings. Wilson said he didn't have an update Saturday.

"Structure protection is high priority and is being closely monitored from the air. ... Potential for blow-up conditions" continues, the Department of Natural Resources said in a statement.

The Rainbow Lodge, which includes a campground, motel and cabins near Lake Superior, was closed. A recorded message by co-owner Kathy Robinson said she had been evacuated and that the property may have been damaged by fire.

    "I'm sorry," she said.

Story: Giant New Mexico fire nears historic mining town

Some people more than 100 miles away in the northern Lower Peninsula reported smelling smoke. The Michigan National Guard dispatched four aircraft and 40 people to the Duck Lake fire and another in Schoolcraft County.

"The Blackhawks typically hoist 900-gallon buckets to unload water on fires. This method has proven very successful in wildfires in other regions," said a spokesman, Capt. Aaron Jenkins.

Wilson said curious people on all-terrain vehicles must stay away.

"It's not a big problem but it does exist. If the wind picks up, the ignition of dry fuel is almost instantaneous," he said.

Weight-Loss Supplements Linked to Liver ... - Body Health & Fitness

    weight loss supplements

Weight-loss supplements are notorious for being ineffective (seriously, how many people do you know who successfully lost weight due to a weight-loss supplement?), but a new, smaller study indicates that the damage done by the often-expensive and useless dieting and bodybuilding aids is not always limited to your bank accounts.

It?s probably a mark of how badly we want weight-loss supplements to work that despite decades of proof that they have not assisted one person lose one pound, people continue to pour large amounts of money into the pills, shakes and other supplements in order to get a hop on shedding weight. (In fact, just today, I saw two people on Facebook shilling weight-loss supplements- ones that cost in the hundreds of dollars- to actual friends with the ?let?s talk? opener.)

Weight-loss supplements are the diet distraction that just won?t go away. But the small study- which is not yet peer-reviewed-?presented?at the?Digestive Disease Week meeting in San Diego- looked at 109 cases of patients who appeared to suffer liver damage due to use of weight-loss supplements.

However, researchers noted that so little regulation of weight-loss supplements exists, making it difficult to gauge the true effects of the pricey diet helpers. In effect, numbers of those injured by the use of weight-loss supplements could be far higher.

Study leader Dr.?Victor Navarro is a professor of medicine, pharmacology and experimental therapies at?Thomas Jefferson University?in Philadelphia. Navarro comments:

The study did not definitively find that weight-loss supplements cause liver damage, but noted that the area requires more study.

Aid workers targeted amid new Pakistan crisis

It's been a tough year for Pakistan-U.S. relations. Crucial NATO supply routes have been shuttered since November, there is tension over drone strikes and now the countries are at odds over the treason conviction of the Pakistani doctor who helped the U.S. locate Osama Bin Laden.?

By Amna Nawaz, NBC News Correspondent

NOWSHERA, Pakistan -- There has been little change to the scenes at Jalozai refugee camp in recent years.

Lines of worn and weary wait to register for services, clutching the few belongings they brought with them.?Food rations and hygiene packs are distributed inside large tents and makeshift shelters bearing the brands of various United Nations and non-governmental agencies. And children -- some barely toddlers -- are everywhere you turn: packed into temporary tent schools, running through the labyrinthian "streets" of shelters, and holding their parents' places in various lines.

But the thousands that crowd the camp and the area around it today are different from the masses relocated during Pakistan's military operations of 2008 and 2009 in the country's northwest. They are different than the throngs seeking shelter after the devastating floods of 2010 and 2011. The vast majority of the 300,000 the camp currently supports are all from Khyber Tribal Agency bordering Afghanistan, where ongoing fighting between Pakistan's military and militant groups forced them to flee their homes and seek safety elsewhere.

As attacks increase, aid workers say they must keep safety in mind at all times.?? NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

Tribesmen: US missiles strike village mosque

Unlike the previous groups of arrivals, this new group wasn't anticipated in such large numbers. At the height of the influx in mid-March, the camp was registering 5,000 new families a day. That number has slowed to 400 or 500 a day, but the arrivals continue. Resources the agencies thought would last for months, are now running out.

"Of course, everybody planned for an emergency," says?Faiz Muhammed,?chief coordinator of Jalozai camp. "But it was planned for, say 10,000 families, maybe for the rest of the year. We're now using up all those resources that were planned for nine months in just two months."

Aine Fay, chairperson of the Pakistan Humanitarian Forum (PHF)-- an informal network of 47 NGOs operating in Pakistan, says the funding situation is dire: less than 3 percent of the required budget to respond to the needs of internally displaced people is available.

"Agencies will run out of money by the end of June if the donor community don't respond," says Fay. "And we're facing into the monsoons of 2012. While we all hope that there will not be a repeat of the floods of 2011 or 2010, we have no guarantee and we have to be prepared for them."

Aid workers say they are concerned that the coming monsoon season may prove devastating for millions of people in Pakistan.

    'We're worried'
Robin Lodge, of the World Food Programme (WFP) -- the sole food provider for the Jalozai families -- says the agency has already had to cut back rations to deal with the funding shortage.

"Funding is not too good," says Lodge. "We're worried about the monsoon season because that will put an additional strain on resources."

As the need for their services grows, aid and relief workers are also having to contend with increased insecurity across the country, as they more frequently become targets for kidnapping -- a common means of fundraising for many militant and criminal groups.

Since 2009, according to numbers compiled by PHF, at least 23 aid and development workers -- foreign and Pakistani staff -- have been kidnapped. Eighteen have been killed.

In 2009, eight staff members of two humanitarian organizations in the northwest Khyber-Pakhtunkwa (KPK) province were shot dead in two separate targeted attacks on their office. In 2010, six staff members of one agency were killed in an attack in KPK, and four other staff members were abducted and one was murdered in Balochistan. In 2011, 14 staff from two different organizations were abducted in separate incidents in Balochistan.

So far this year, five humanitarian workers have been abducted and four have been murdered in Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab provinces.

Recently released video of American Warren Weinstein -- kidnapped from his Lahore home in August 2010 -- made headlines as the first sign of life since he was taken. The brutal April murder of Dr. Khalil Dale, a British aid worker with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Balochistan, again brought to the forefront the growing insecurity faced by relief workers in Pakistan.

An American aid worker kidnapped last summer in Pakistan resurfaced Monday morning in a video message released by al-Qaida. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

In response, the ICRC suspended its projects across much of the country as it reassesses its operations, placing local staffers on paid leave and bringing foreign staffers back from the field into Islamabad. This is the first time the agency has suspended operations in Pakistan since it began working here in 1947.

Local, national staff in particular are targeted here -- more visible and more frequently spending time on projects in their own communities than their foreign colleagues who visit sites from time to time. A fake vaccination program carried out by the CIA using local staff in the lead-up to the Osama bin Laden raid created additional problems for local humanitarian workers, leading to suspicion among communities as to aid organizations' true intentions.

Pakistan jails doctor who helped CIA find bin Laden

In February, InterAction -- the largest alliance of U.S.-based international NGOs -- sent a letter to CIA director David Petraeus expressing concern that activities like the vaccination program undermined humanitarian efforts in Pakistan and jeopardized the lives of their staff.

"The CIA's use of the cover of humanitarian activity casts doubt on the intentions and integrity of all humanitarian actors in Pakistan," wrote Samuel Worthington, InterAction's president. "It is imperative that independent, impartial humanitarian action be kept clearly distinct from intelligence-gathering activities. Any blurring of the two risks causing setbacks in decades-long global health and humanitarian efforts and endangers the lives of those working to make advances on the behalf of the global community."

Aid workers from multiple organizations told NBC News that security has always been a part of their planning in Pakistan, but re-assessments and operational re-adjustments have been necessary in recent years as the kidnappings and violence have increased.

Pakistan blocks Twitter over 'blasphemous content'

"I think for a lot of organizations, we would measure the vulnerability that communities are at -- the need for the services that we can provide -- versus the risk we think our staff are exposed to," says Fay. "If the risk is greater than the need on the ground, the answer is simple."

    Muhammed Muheisen / AP

Images of daily life, political pursuits, religious rites and deadly violence.

Humanitarian workers in Pakistan with whom we spoke, most who wished to remain anonymous, all maintain that despite the risk and the resources they must now divert from aid delivery to security considerations, their priorities remain the same.

"We have had to look at things more carefully, scale up in certain areas of security, re-evaluate," says Stacey Winston, with the UN's office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. "We try to keep security a priority and also to maintain operations as much as possible, because that is really the priority -- to reach as many people as quickly as possible in the humanitarian response."

Linux Mint 13 'Maya' released, just in time for the next piktun

    Linux Mint 13 'Maya' released

Linux comes in all sorts of flavors -- it's part of what makes the OS so confusing to new comers. To make matters worse, some of the most popular variants are actually based on other distros, such as Linux Mint, the refreshing desktop that's based largely on Ubuntu. So, if you're wondering what's new in the Mint 13, a good place to start is probably our review of the aubergine OS. Of course, Maya has a few wrinkles of its own -- including a pair of desktop options dubbed MATE and Cinnamon. MATE, as you may recall, was introduced in the last version, but Cinnamon is all new (read: a tad unstable) and built on a modern framework using Gnome 3 and Clutter. There have been a few other new additions, including a new display manager in MDM and a switch to Yahoo! as the default search engine. As usual with these things, you can download it and try it out for free at the source.

    [Thanks, Mohamad]
