Humane Society cuts hours; stolen bike returned with note: Clark ...

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington recently announced that, beginning Jan. 21, it will no longer be open on Mondays. Vancouver-area residents can't bring in or adopt animals on Mondays, but the shelter will continue to take in animals brought in by animal control officers. The staff will also decrease from about 60 employees to 50, through attrition and layoffs.

? A stolen tandem bicycle was returned to its owners Wednesday along with an apologetic note, the Vancouver Police Department said. "I am trying to do the right thing," the note said. It was signed simply "Guilty."?

? A new "Vancouvria" clip, "Is It Local," makes fun of Vancouver as Portland's suburban opposite. In a spoof of "Portlandia's" famous restaurant scene, the diners are at "Applebuzz," a cheery chain restaurant where the food is proudly not local, but cheap. The server assures the couple that their chicken is raised on factory farms, where there's no concern whatever about greenhouse gases or workers' rights.

? Eight young musicians have won the region's top classical music competition, "Young Artists Debut! The Van Buren Concerto Competition." Created by Portland musician Niel DePonte of MetroArts Inc. 19 years ago, the contest culminates with a public concert where each soloist performs a single work with an orchestra. Find out who the winners are.

? Authorities say they have recovered six suitcases and several other items from a Vancouver home allegedly stolen from Portland International Airport. Port of Portland and Vancouver police searched a home about 10 a.m., Tuesday in the 9600 block of Southeast 7th Street believed to have people inside linked to 15 cases of baggage theft from the airport since May 2012.

? Liz Pike wants guns in schools. The Republican from Camas, was recently elected to the Washington state House to represent the 18th District, which will encompass Washougal, Battle Ground and Ridgefield. Her proposal would allow teachers to carry concealed weapons in Washington schools after completing a voluntary mental health evaluation, as well as gun training at their own expense.

? Clark County is seeking to be reclassified as a rural county during the Washington Legislature's upcoming session in order to take advantage of a state law granting a 0.09 percent sales-tax rebate to rural counties.

? A Vancouver man will undergo a mental evaluation after triggering several reckless driving calls today, then leading Clackamas County sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase through the Happy Valley area.No one was injured in the incident.

? Taxable retail sales in Clark County rose 6.9 percent, or $1.2 billion, in the third quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, according to the Washington State Department of Revenue.

? Mountain View's Carly Holboke is a scoring machine. Holboke is the leader of a Thunder girls basketball team looking to make its first state tournament appearance since 2001. Holboke is a prolific scorer, as she averaged 24 points a game during the 2011-12 season. But 20.3 points a game is proving to be plenty as Mountain View is off to a 10-5 start this season.

? The Clark County Prosecutor's Office says a bus driver will not face criminal charges in the death last April 28 of an 11-year-old bicyclist in downtown Vancouver.

? Clark County advanced laser manufacturer nLight Corp. said that it has purchased a small Michigan company called Arbor Photonics. nLight is a Clark County company that has more than 400 employees and reported 2011 revenue of $62.6 million.

? The east and south sections of the Vancouver Barracks are going to become a park. The project will take years to complete, perhaps 10 or 20, but the National Park Service will invest $7 million this year in new water, sewer and electrical systems for 17 buildings, all built between 1904 and 1943 on the 33-acre site.
